Insidious: The Last Key Review

Showtime is returning to the world of their series “Penny Dreadful” with the upcoming spinoff “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, and Deadline reports today that horror icon Lin Shaye (the Insidious franchise) has joined the cast! Additionally, Amy Madigan (Gone Baby Gone) and Brent Spiner (Star Trek The Next Generation) have also come aboard.

Madigan will play Miss Adelaide Finnister, the mother of the charismatic radio evangelist Sister Molly. Miss Adelaide shrewdly manages the church’s finances and oversees the growing religious empire.

Spiner will portray Capt. Ned Vanderhoff, the Precinct Captain at the Hollenbeck police station in Boyle Heights – the boss of Tiago Vega and Lewis Michener. A veteran officer under a lot pressure, Vanderhoff struggles to keep a lid on the volatile and changing city.

Shaye will play Dottie Minter, a friend and ally of Detective Lewis Michener. Cunning, wry and clever, Dottie is an invaluable operative in the battle against Third Reich espionage in Los Angeles.

The series will also star Rory Kinnear, Natalie Dormer, Nathan LaneDaniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Adriana BarrazaJessica Garza and Johnathan Nieves.

A spiritual descendant of the original “Penny Dreadful” story set in Victorian-era London, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” explores an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of the period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop. This chapter is a bold new vision that will employ all new characters and storylines.

Tony and Golden Globe award winner and three-time Oscar nominee John Logan, creator, writer and executive producer of the Emmy nominated series “Penny Dreadful”, will continue in those same roles. Michael Aguilar will also serve as executive producer.

Last week we learned that Steve Buscemi had joined the cast of “Wednesday” Season 2 at Netflix, and Variety lets us know that Thandiwe Newton (“Westworld”) has also signed on.

Jenna Ortega is back as Wednesday Addams in the upcoming second season of Netflix’s “Wednesday,” with Steve Buscemi playing the new principal of Nevermore Academy.

Jenna Ortega stars in the hit series as Wednesday Addams, with Luis Guzmán playing Gomez and Catherine Zeta-Jones playing Morticia in Tim Burton’s Netflix series. Christina Ricci also appears in the show, playing a brand new role, with Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester.

“Wednesday” is described as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy.” The series follows…

“Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships.”

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (“Smallville”) are the writers and showrunners, with Tim Burton executive producing and directing several episodes of the show’s debut season.

We don’t know much about “Wednesday” Season 2 at the moment but Jenna Ortega has promised that the new season will be “bolder” and darker than the first season of the series.

“We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror more,” Ortega said last year.
