New Game Modes Added in Latest ‘Metroid Dread’ Update

Published

on

If you’re looking for a reason to jump back into Metroid Dread, or are looking for another reason to grab the game (other than it being awesome), Nintendo and developer MercurySteam have added several new game modes to the game that will no doubt please fans. The 2.1.0 update for Metroid Dread not only adds a Boss Rush mode, but also Survival Rush and Dread Rush modes for those looking for that extra challenge.

Unlocked after completing the main game, Boss Rush mode is self-explanatory. Samus will face off against 12 continuous boss battles, with the aim to achieve the best time. Any damage received during the previous fight is carried-over into the next fight, though weapons are fully-restored between battles. If Samus is defeated, players may select “Retry” to continue playing from the start of the battle they lost, but with a time penalty.

Dread Rush is unlocked after completing the game using Dread Mode, and is similar to Boss Rush. The only difference is if Samus is hit by a boss, her energy drops to zero and she is defeated.

Lastly, Survival Rush is unlocked after completing either Boss Rush or Dread Rush. In this mode, players race to defeat as many bosses as they can within a 5-minute time limit. Any damage received, or weapons spent are carried-over into the next battle. Even if time remains on the clock, Samus being defeated will result in a game over. Defeating a boss will add a fixed amount of time to the countdown clock. Defeat a boss without receiving any damage to receive an even bigger time bonus.

Metroid Dread is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

Obsidian Entertainment Reportedly Pivoted to Work on New ‘Fallout’ Title

Published

The results of Xbox’s layoffs last week have resulted in a metaphorical monkey’s paw effect of sorts surrounding Obsidian Entertainment. As a result of the layoffs, the studio has canceled multiple projects, and in turn has begun work on a new game in the Fallout series. However, there are conflicting reports that the sequel to last year’s Avowed, which was mandated to be one of the projects canceled, is still alive.

Initially reported by Bloomberg, Obsidian has laid off around a quarter of its employees as a result of the mandate by Xbox. At the same time, the studio’s new directive is a new title in the Fallout universe. This would be the second time Obsidian has developed a Fallout title, with the first obviously being 2010’s much-lauded Fallout: New Vegas.

As for the sequel to Avowed, Bloomberg reported that the project was canceled. However, designer and co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment Chris Avellone took to X in response to the news, stating that the team was still working on the project, and was waiting to re-pitch the game “when the dust settles“, as so much work had already been put into the project.

In fact, progress on the Avowed sequel was “going well”, and was expected to be announced within the next year.

As for the new Fallout title, this would be the first new entry in the series since 2018’s online title Fallout 76, which has reached over 23 million players. Fallout: New Vegas is currently available on Steam, PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360.
