Exclusive Trailer: First Look at Some of the Grotesque Monsters from Slavic Dark Fantasy Game ‘Gord’

Published

on

We’ve talked about Team17 Digital and Covenant.dev’s upcoming dark fantasy RTS Gord several times now. We even touched on some of the monsters you’ll be facing when the game arrives next month. But hey, we can always use more monster reveals, right? That’s exactly what the developers have given us in a new trailer. And for you lovers of lore, we also have descriptions of several of the monsters you’ll be encountering, which draw from Slavic mythology and folklore.

Kicking things off is the creature known as Ardaven, whose rotted body is home to the spirits of Sloth and Repugnance. Inseparably bound to its swampy surroundings, Ardaven feeds on its home, then toxifies it with its own secretions. Although it cannot move its body, its demands, to anyone unlucky enough to venture near, are somehow inescapable.

In Slavic folklore, Rusalka is a typically feminine entity, often malicious toward mankind, and can be found near water reservoirs, where she tends to her appearance and uses an alternative form to lure in hapless wanderers. Love comes just as easy as hate to her, and whenever she feels a sense of betrayal, she will find the most creative and cruel ways to punish the culprit.

Mimics are everywhere in the lands of Lysatia but often, hard to recognize. To lure in its victims, Mimics morph their clay-like body to take the shape of the last creature, or thing, they have seen. Though sluggish in movement, the Mimic can be difficult to injure due to its liquid-like composition.

In a downpour, rivers and lakes become murky and fish scatter. Woken by the turmoil, Morkul leaves its home and emerges from the water. With skin sensitive to drought, rainy weather is its chance to hunt, so it watches for a silhouette on the bank and will jump from the water to attack its victim.

Hidden underground, in bushes, or below landslides, Bloodworms and their offspring wait patiently for a victim. Young Bloodworms suck at the skin like leeches, while adults attack the mouth and lay eggs in the victim’s body. After hatching, Bloodworm offspring feed off their host’s carrion, or choose an unlucky scavenger as their next victim.

The treetops are full of Gazers and those who risk looking up may never see again. Gazers cannot bear eye contact and if provoked by an intruder, they will throw themselves at an enemy in an attempt to blind them. If successful, it’s often a simple matter for a Gazer to devour the rest of their victim’s face.

There are obviously plenty more monsters you’ll be encountering once Gord launches on August 17th for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

While it’s not a sequel to DreadOut 2 that some fans were hoping for, developer Digital Happiness and Singapore-based publisher Soft Source Publishing have announced the next best thing with DreadOut Remastered Collection, which is set to head to the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch later this year. This remaster will include the original DreadOut, and the standalone game DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark. Details on just what the remaster includes have yet to be revealed.

“Having worked on bringing DreadOut 2 to consoles, the team at Soft Source Publishing were enthralled by the idea when Pak Rachmad CEO of Digital Happiness threw out the idea of bringing back DreadOut and DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark to consoles,” says Soft Source Publishing director Sameer Pandit in a press release (thanks, Gematsu!). “It’s an immediate thought that we want to be a part of this new project. DreadOut is an iconic IP in Asia and has been spreading its wings in the rest of the world with the release of DreadOut 2 on consoles.”

For those who don’t know, DreadOut (which you can find on Steam) is a third-person supernatural horror game that was released back in 2014 where you play as Linda, a high school student. When the group of high school students Linda was a part of became lost while on a field trip, they stumble across an abandoned town. However, the town holds a dark secret that has left Linda fighting to get out of the town. Using a similar mechanic to Fatal Frame, Linda is equipped with a smart-phone and an SLR camera, which she will use to battle against the horrors in the town and solve puzzles.

Meanwhile, DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark is a “missing chapter” from the original game, where you will help Linda face off against more ghosts and challenges in The Mirror Realm: a portal of worlds that connects it to eight haunted dominions where horrific ghosts are ready to greet her in the most terrifying way possible.
