Dungeon-Crawling Deckbuilder ‘Shroom and Gloom’ Enters Early Access on September 10 [Trailer]

Fans of dungeon crawlers can look forward to Team Lazerbeam and Devolver Digital’s Shroom and Gloom, their upcoming hand-drawn fungal roguelike. Launching on September 10 into Early Access on Steam, you can get a taste of what’s to come with the demo that’s currently available on the game’s Steam page. In addition, the devs offer a deep dive into the game alongside the release date announcement.

Shroom and Gloom is a unique roguelike about exploring the depths of hand-drawn dungeons, while utilizing hundreds of cards spread across two distinct decks to unleash synergies and combos on hordes of grotesque fungal foes. Every enemy you encounter is edible, every attack is infinitely upgradeable, and every run is an opportunity for unprecedented levels of card-based chaos.

Use the Explore deck to reveal, search, break, unlock, ignite, feed and fix as you head even deeper into the game’s dungeons. There, you’ll make use of the Combat deck to hack, slash, roast and eat the fungal foes that stand between you and the mysterious underground realm known as The Gloom.

As mentioned, the game has a couple of unique ways for players to grow and modify their cards infinitely. You can grow low level starting cards into over-powered attacks, or modify rare cards into game-breaking super-weapons.

Seeing as your foes are fungi, Shroom and Gloom features a bounty of ways for you to season, skewer or roast your foes, then eat them to restore lost health. Or, if you’d like, you can throw your roasted enemies into a pot, and cook up some game-changing soups.

It’s all tied together by the game’s hand-drawn art, which is mixed with 3D spaces to present a surreal, visually striking world of mushrooms and madness.

Currently, the team plans on having Shroom and Gloom in Early Access for “between 12 and 24 months” to further expand the game with a new pathway, featuring new Explore and Combat cards, new character classes, and additional quests and challenges.
