This is highly unusual given that it’s only supposed to be my “pick” of the week, but it’s my column so I’ll do as I damn well please! I’m seriously bursting at the seams with excitement for both of these titles (which you probably know by now). To be frank, the new Daredevil is without a doubt one of the best ongoing books right now at Marvel. Green Wake on the other hand, is one of the best horror titles anywhere. You guys have all heard me ramble about how much I love this book, but somehow every single issue the creative team manages to make me love it a little bit more. The story becomes increasingly complex with each installment (which is quite the feat given how abstract this book is), but it only increases the desire to read the next issue. I swear this book is like a strong batch of street crack.

The story is a mix somewhere between LOST, Twin Peaks, and a Raymond Chandler story making for one of the most unique settings out there. Last month’s ish kicked of the first issue of the new ongoing and it jumped leaps and bounds beyond the initial 5-issue mini-series (which you should also pick up). Wiebe managed to introduce a bunch of new characters and jump across timelines without making his baby a mess.

If you’re looking for a new horror series that is unlike anything you’ve read before, Green Wake is your book. If you’re already reading this series, good for you. If you’re not, what the f*ck is wrong with you? Seriously though, what the f*ck?

Honestly, I never cared for Daredevil. Whether it was because I saw the terrible movie before I read any of the comics, or because the idea of a blind lawyer jumping around seemed ludicrous to me, I’m not sure. What I do know for sure is that Mark Waid’s Daredevil is la crème de la crème. Since the very first issue this team has been relentlessly offering fantastic books, and this week should be no exception.

Maybe Marvel books aren’t your regular bag; maybe you prefer the more offbeat stories that don’t get tied up in massive events. Lucky for you Daredevil manages to maintain a no bullshit attitude and (so far) has not been influenced or dragged into any stupid tie-ins. This is the real deal as far has mainstream superhero books go, and if you’re skipping this title, you’re missing out in a huge way.

Waid’s handling of Murdock is sensational, he’s over the top in almost every possible way, but somehow it works wonders. His haphazard pleas to his friends that he is not in fact Daredevil are always comical, but balanced with his ability to kick the crap out of a gang of thugs, it all just fits so perfectly. Marcos Martin’s artwork flawlessly fits with Waid’s writing style; you would be hard struck to find a better creative team anywhere out there. It truly showcases just how powerful the comics medium can be when done properly.
