‘Rings’ Is a Prequel to ‘The Ring’ (Exclusive)

UPDATE Marc 22, 2015: Rings is actually a sequel, and not a prequel as we originally reported.

It was announced a few weeks back that Rings, the newest incarnation of the J-horror franchise that’s to be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez and stars Italian actress Matilda Lutz, will hit theaters November 13, 2015.

Now, with casting is underway, Bloody Disgusting was able to find out what the 3-D Ring will be about. Our sources tell us that the new The Ring is actually a prequel, and takes place before the 2002 remake that starred Naomi Watts as a woman uncovering the mystery behind a haunted VHS tape. Rings will take place years before the creation of said tape and tell the origin of Samara’s reign of terror.

“Rings” is also the name of the short – directed by TCM 2 and TMNTs’ Jonathan Liebesman – that accompanied the purchase of The Ring 2 on home video in 2005.

Aviva Goldsman, David Loucka and Jacon Aaron Estes all had a hand in writing the script, which is based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki.

bad bad news. i hate prequels…

    • ThunderDragoon

      I feel the same way.

  • Another origin story that totally kills the creepy factor of the villian/monster by explaining everything ad nauseam. When will Hollywood learn? The unknown factor is what makes these movies scary.

Even the Japanese take on the origin story was a misfire (albeit an interesting, unscary one).

And besides, the origin was pretty well-explained in the first installment. I’d much rather see another cycle of the tape doing it’s rounds, perhaps before it’s left in the cabin where we find it again in The Ring 1.

  • Chrissie-Watkins

I really liked in the original, how Samara’s origin was NOT explained. Made it much scarier. But, if they could tell the story of the mother’s insanity and maybe even how the tape was made without revealing too much of where, exactly, Samara came from, it might be ok.

    • AphroditeBoy

I agree – I think that the rumors spread by the locals on the island were more interesting than the back story they wrote for her character in ‘The Ring 2.’ The whole adoption story kind of ruined the mystery a bit. At the same time, I think showing the mother’s descent into insanity and how Samara’s powers initially began to manifest could be interesting if they do it right.

  • Marco Arizpe

I have no inherent problem with prequels, the problem with horror prequels is that a lot of good horror comes from the fear of the unknown and prequels are meant to explain things that went unexplained in the original work.

      12 months ago,after
resigning my old job , i’ve had luck to get familiar with this superb
freelance job over internet that literally saved me… They offer online
home-based work. My last paycheck after working for them for 4 months
was $10000… Amazing thing about is that the only requirement for the
job is simple typing and connection to the internet…

Хорошая новость…Все звонки были охуенные ! Что яппавские , что пиндосовские. Жгите дальше , парни, путайте, сцукко нас из-зо всех сил..

hmmmm both american movies covered her past well enough…..not sure what else there is to tell. we know how Samara died and why and then the sequel showed us more about her mother and her issues.

so i guess we won’t be seeing Samara use the internet and/or on demand services to infect the world…it’ll be back to tapes, assuming the story gets that far.

lol what in the hell is with all the prequels?! It’s the Age of Prequels, my friends.

3D AND a prequel? Two things the Japanese series already failed at rolled into one movie. Sign me up… (for something else)

  • drmodem

Having to physically copy and pass on the tape to somebody else makes them more accountable. Just forwarding an e-mail with a YouTube link isn’t quite as powerful, and would make the whole thing more anonymous. I always felt it was odd that we didn’t see Rachel give Noah’s new girlfriend the tape at the end of the movie, especially after their argument.

  • diapers

With proper treatment, this could be pretty cool. Why 3D, though?

  • wehoaks

Explaining and humanizing evil is always a bad thing.

  • Freddy Krueger Fan

I remember Rings on The Ring 2 DVD back in 06. It was excellent and The Ring 2 was the biggest piece of shit from 05. I wanted Rings to be a full movie.

  • K-Dogg

I will probably be alone on this, but if done well, this could be great.

  • AphroditeBoy

I think it’s a good idea – although I secretly hope they will do some kind of prequel/sequel that has two different timelines, revealing Samara’s history while simultaneously telling a new story in the present that relates to the curse spreading in the modern day. They need to find a new motivation for Samara I think – she already went searching for a mother and got rejected. How does that change the motivations of her spirit? Or maybe it’s better if she doesn’t even have one.

I agree. I think it will be difficult to focus the plot entirely on Samara’s backstory and still be engaging. I’d like to see a double time line as well, maybe showing how Samara became the villain from The Ring, and a second showing how she evolved passed that.

  • Whiskeyriver

Is it too much to ask for just a straight sequel that further continues the story instead of back tracking to the absolute beginning? What next? The Terminator prequel?

    • Grimphantom

Isn’t the new Terminator being a prequel? lol

  • Grimphantom

If they wanted to continue they should have started with a straight sequel, showing years of what happen from the first film. Probably showing Naomi Watts character looking very old and traumatized because Samara or whatever still haunts her.

Anyway i don’t see why they try to revive something that wasn’t scary to begin with…….heck, Gravity Falls has more scarier stuff than this.
