Lars Von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’ an Oxymoron?

There’s been so much news I completely forgot about Lars Von Trier’s end of the world genre drama Melancholia!

It was announced that Magnolia Pictures has picked up the North American distribution rights to the film featuring the all-star cast Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgard, Udo Kier, and John Hurt.

First official plot details were revealed as Dunst and Gainsbourg play sisters whose lives are drifting apart as the universe spectacularly unravels in what Von Trier describes as “a beautiful movie about the end of the world.” I’d say this gives the title a slightly ironic appeal?

Obviously, this could end up being a film very not worthy of Bloody Disgusting’s coverage, but we’ll play it out until we see some images and a trailer.
