“Stranger Things” Creators Want You to Change This TV Setting Before Season 2
The second season of “Stranger Things” is arriving just in time for us to binge it over the course of Halloween weekend, and we cannot wait. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer are just as excited for us to check it out, but they have one simple request before it arrives.
The motion-smoothing setting on your TV. Turn. It. Off.
In a chat with Vulture this week, the Duffer Brothers explained the problem.
“The key thing is to turn off anything that says ‘motion,’” Matt told the site. “‘TruMotion.’ ‘Smooth motion.’ When I go to my friends’ places back home, I’m constantly fixing their TVs. Us and everyone in Hollywood puts so much time and effort and money into getting things to look just right. And when you see it in someone’s home, it looks like it was shot on an iPhone.”
“It’s shocking!” Ross added. “We were just at Comic-Con, and we walk on the main floor and the settings on every single TV is wrong. I was like, ‘Didn’t a bunch of nerds put this together? What is wrong with them?’”
Motion-smoothing is also known as “the soap opera effect,” giving the picture on your TV an unnaturally smooth look. Turn it off and voila, all is back to normal!
“Stranger Things” returns to Netflix on October 27.
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).
Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.
While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.
The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.
