‘DreadOut’ And ‘The Forest’ Are Coming To Steam!

Today, Valve greenlit another batch of games for distribution on their Steam platform. Among the titles are two very promising indie horror games, the Fatal Frame inspired DreadOut and the extraordinarily creepy sandbox horror game The Forest. For DreadOut, the good news just keeps coming, as their crowd-funding campaign ended with full funding just last month. Full list of greenlit games after the jump.

‘DreadOut’ Indiegogo Campaign Ends With Full Funding

A few days ago I wasn’t sure whether DreadOut’s Indiegogo campaign would receive the funding they asked for. With only a couple days left in the campaign, they were still 20% short of their $25k goal. Thankfully, horror fans pulled through and the campaign ended this weekend with a little over $29k. That means two ambitious indie horror games have had successful crowd-funding campaigns in the last week — Among the Sleep’s Kickstarter ended last Friday after receiving nearly $250k.

‘DreadOut’ Indiegogo Campaign Almost Over, Still Short Of Funding Goal

Earlier this week Among the Sleep successfully passed its funding goal, so this has already been a great week for one indie horror developer. I say we spread the love to another. There are only three days left in DreadOut’s Indiegogo campaign and they’re still short of their $25k goal.

Granted, they’re running a flexible funding campaign, so even if it falls short they’ll get the money they’ve raised so far. It’d still be nice to see two incredible indie horror games get the support they need this week. If you’d like to support the game, you can donate here.

6 Upcoming Horror Games That Look Absolutely Terrifying

I don’t know if you’ve noticed this already, but this is an incredibly exciting time to be a horror fan. There are more new horror releases now than there’s ever been. We’ve seen multiple entries in franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, as well as a slew of quality indie horror games from devs like Frictional Games (Amnesia), Blue Isle (Slender: The Arrival), and Red Barrels (Outlast), among others. Perhaps what’s most exciting about this recent surge of popularity the genre’s seeing are the hints at where it’s headed next.

Five years ago action horror was the thing. As popular series like Resident Evil (RE4-5) and Silent Hill (Homecoming) strayed away from their survival horror roots and newcomers like Dead Space and Left 4 Dead saw great success, for a while it looked like the final nails were being hammered into the beloved subgenre’s coffin. Don’t get me wrong, action horror is still big now, but after the relative failures of Resident Evil 6 and Dead Space 3, I no longer see it becoming the norm. Between games like the six I have waiting for you after the break, it looks like survival horror is coming back, and this time it’s returning in a far more terrifying form.

[Indie Horror Spotlight] ‘DreadOut’ Has A Very Persistent Mosquito

In this very special edition of Indie Horror Spotlight, it’s Adam vs. the Mosquito.

Seriously. If there was a list of annoying video game bugs — the insects, not those of the technical variety — DreadOut’s mosquito would claim every spot on the list. That persistent creature followed me the whole time, and refused to let me lock him in a room so I could have some good scary fun. Other than that fun-sucking mosquito, the demo’s pretty great. You can watch me play it after the jump.

Get Your Spirit Photography Fix With The ‘DreadOut’ Demo, Available Now

There’s a good chance we won’t be seeing any more of Fatal Frame, at least not outside Japan. That leaves us to find new ways to fill that camera obscura shaped hole in our hearts. Unfortunately, spirit photography is an area that isn’t covered too thoroughly in video games. The 3DS exclusive Spirit Camera didn’t quite deliver, so that leaves us with the similarly themed indie horror title DreadOut. We’ve covered it before, and now, developer Digital Happiness has released a demo for it. It looks great, I’m downloading it now.

You can download the demo here, and if you like it I recommend helping DreadOut get distribution by supporting it on Steam Greenlight. If downloading the demo sounds like too much work, you can still enjoy the new trailer I have waiting for you in the darkest recesses of this post.

If You’re Aching For A New Fatal Frame, ‘DreadOut’ Has You Covered

Fatal Frame hasn’t had a serious presence in the states in some time, after the fourth game was released exclusively in Japan with no plans to officially bring it anywhere else. There’s always the video game black market, but you can’t get in without a trench coat and the Matrix was forever ago, so who still owns one of those, am I right? If you’re like me, than you’ve undoubtedly spent the last few years jonesing for the sweet, sweet paranormal horror that could only the Fatal Frame games offered. That’s why I’d very much like to introduce you to DreadOut, an indie horror game that’s currently fighting the good fight on Steam Greenlight. It looks great, and thanks to Indonesian musical artist SARASVATI, it should sound great too. See it in action after the jump.
