Guillermo Del Toro Trying Once More For A Tom Cruise Infused ‘At The Mountains Of Madness’

Your daily grain of salt here, please take me before reading this article. Guillermo del Toro, the man of a million projects (wisely) in development, has made overtures about giving his H.P. Lovecraft adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness another shot.

The project died at Universal back in 2011 due to budget issues, and recently del Toro seemed leery of reviving it due to perceived similarities with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Well, he saw Prometheus and he doesn’t think it’s such a stumbling blaock after all.

Speaking to the Playlist he said, “I’m going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss… We’re gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio's] interested… Tom [Cruise] is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He’s been such a great ally of the project.” As for Prometheus he says, “Not really, I saw it finally and.. yes, there are things in common, but, you know, screw it. Lovecraft was there first!

The would-be H.P. Lovecraft adaptation “tells the story of geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins (including strange fossils of unheard-of creatures and carved stones tens of millions of years old) and a dangerous secret of the City of the Old Ones that lay beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas.

Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Insane’ Is Still Seeking A Publisher

Back in November, Guillermo Del Toro’s Insane found a developer, and now, he’s seeking a publisher. In a recent interview with the Toronto Sun — the same one where Del Toro spoke about his upcoming film Pacific Rim — he confirmed that he hasn’t yet found a publisher. Unfortunately, you need both to get a game to market, so it looks like we’re halfway there. More after the break!

Show Your Love For ‘Mama’ By Watching These 4 Clips

Gearing up for the January 18 release, Universal Pictures provided Bloody Disgusting with four clips from Mama, the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller about a group of feral children raised by something sinister.

Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse and Daniel Kash all star. The pic is based on a short of the same name. READ MORE

GLaDOS’ Cameo In ‘Pacific Rim’ Is Del Toro’s Tribute To Portal

Not long after the ‘Pacific Rim’ trailer came online did it take for geeks around the world to notice the remarkable similarity between the AI voice in the trailer to that of Portal’s lovable rogue AI, GLaDOS. It was uncanny, and apparently, on purpose. Director Guillermo Del Toro told the Toronto Sun in a recent interview that he’s a fan of the Portal series and he actually sought out Ellen McLain, the voice of GLaDOS, to be in the film. He even went to Valve to get permission to use GLaDOS, which he received.

Del Toro also confirmed that the actual voice of the AI will be a little less GLaDOS — good thing too, because while I’m a huge fan of the games, hearing her would’ve been a little difficult to get used to. Unless she sang about cake. Then it’s obviously okay. If you missed the trailer — in all its GLaDOS goodness — you should most definitely check it out after break.

‘Pacific Rim’ Images Need Less Talk, More Do

Warner Bros. has released a yet another still from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim… but again, don’t expect to see any robots or monsters in it. While the trailer does tease one of the giant creatures, we could use more action-packed imagery, instead of pics of people standing around talking. Yawn.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

The battle begins on July 12, 2013. READ MORE

Review: ‘The Strain’ #9

The Strain #9 is full of feverish imagination as the pages come alive with pulse-pounding action and nail-biting suspense. “The Strain” puts a fresh and modern spin on vampirism, treating it as a parasitic virus that breaks down the body, altering the host in its process. Highly entertaining, “The Strain” #9 continues the quick-pace and high action. READ MORE

Paul Williams Teams With Guillermo del Toro On ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ Stage Play

Pan’s Labyrinth is taking shape as a stage musical, reports Deadline. The 2006 Guillermo del Toro-directed film is about a young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer who finds refuge and terror in a fantasy world in 1944 Fascist Spain.

The stage version already has a book that has been written by del Toro and Jeremy Ungar. Paul Williams has just been signed to write the lyrics. Gustavo Santaolalla, who twice won Oscars for composing the scores for Brokeback Mountain and Babel, is writing the music. Robert Fox is producing with del Toro and Gary Ungar.

Del Toro has been working quietly on this for four years, interviewing directors, librettists and composers. Del Toro, Williams and Santaolalla are also working on songs for the animated Reel FX film Day Of The Dead, which is in advanced stages of production. READ MORE

Legendary Pictures Begins Developing ‘Pacific Rim’ Sequel

According to THR, Legendary Pictures won’t release the Guillermo del Toro sci-fi tentpole Pacific Rim until July 12, 2013, but it’s already laying the groundwork for a sequel, tapping Travis Beacham (A Killing on Carnival Row, Clash of the Titans, Black Hole) to pen the script.

Beacham wrote the initial treatment for Pacific Rim, as the project is affectionately known, as a spec script, which Legendary picked up in June 2010. Del Toro quickly became involved in its development and when his passion project At the Mountains of Madness fell apart, he made it his next picture. Warner Bros. will distribute.

‘Rim’ centers on a defense force consisting of mechas, giant robots and their human pilots, who are fighting to save humanity from gigantic monsters invading from an other-worldly dimension.

Sources say Del Toro will supervise the writing of the sequel script, although at this stage it’s unclear whether he will direct. READ MORE

Guillermo Del Toro Officially Directing ‘Crimson Peak’ Haunter Next!

Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Pacific Rim) has officially announced that Crimson Peak will be his next feature venture behind the camera. The film is set to start shooting in early 2014, allowing him to finish post-production on Pacific Rim and direct his TV Pilot for “The Strain” (based on the vampire books he co-authored with Chuck Hogan). Legendary Pictures will produce with the expectation it will release through its deal with Warner Bros. In the meantime he’ll be doing a new draft of the script with Lucinda Coxon (Wild Target).

What is Crimson Peak? It sounds like a big-budget tackling of the terrain staked out by many of our favorite Haunted House movies, from classics such as The Haunting all the way up to Kubrick’s version of The Shining, which Del Toro seems to have a particular affinity for. Speaking of that film he told Deadline, “[it's] another Mount Everest of the haunted house movie. I loved the way that Kubrick had such control over the big sets he used, and how much big production value there was. I think people are getting used to horror subjects done as found footage or B-value budgets. I wanted this to feel like a throwback.

The closest he would get to describing Crimson Peak is this, “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.

Does this mean his adaptation of HP Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness is dead? Nope! He hopes to bring Legendary Pictures – who I’m assuming are very happy with Pacific Rim to have gone in on this project – onto that one in the future as well.

Oscar Winning Make-Up Artist Rick Baker Receives A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Rick Baker Gets A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame!

Normally we don’t cover this sort of thing at Bloody-Disgusting, we’re not an award-centric bunch. But this is Rick Baker we’re talking about. Even if you’re not familiar with his name I guarantee that, as a BD reader, he has touched your life in some way. Proof? Okay… An American Werewolf In London, Star Wars, Videodrome, Starman, Silver Bullet, Captain EO, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Harry And The Hendersons, Gremlins 2, Ed Wood, Wolf, The Frighteners, Escape From L.A., Men In Black, The Devil’s Advocate, The Ring, Hellboy 2, The Wolfman Remake… the list goes on.

Baker is at least partially responsible, and in most cases almost 100% responsible, for the outstanding special effects makeup and creature designs in those projects. He’s also won 7 Oscars for best makeup, first winning for AWIL in 1981 (the year the category itself started), and has been nominated for an additional 5 Academy Awards. He’s also won a sh*tload of Saturn Awards.

Which is why it makes sense that a throng of people (including yours truly) gathered, in what amounts to torrential rain by LA standards, to see him receive his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame this morning. Though the event was in part to celebrate today’s release of the better-than-expected Men In Black 3 on DVD/Blu-ray, it was really about paying homage to his entire body of work. Directors Guillermo Del Toro (whom Baker most recently worked with on Hellboy 2) and Barry Sonnenfeld (Baker worked on all three Men In Black films) were onhand to pay tribute to their colleague. Sonnenfeld characterized Baker as writer as well as a designer, breathing stories and verisimilitude into his work. Del Toro, meanwhile, praised Baker as an “actor” in his own right – his creations being a performance of their own. Near the end of the ceremony, a representative for the Guiness Book Of World records who presented him with plaques for “Most Oscar Wins” and “Most Oscar Nominations” for a makeup artist.

And, courtesy of Wired, we also have a blueprint of one of the human-piloted Jaeger robots (this particular design is for the Gipsy Danger mecha).

Lovecraft Fans Rejoice! Del Toro’s ‘Insane’ Has Been Picked Up By A New Developer

Oh good, I was getting worried. Acclaimed director and crafter of all things fantastical Guillermo Del Toro’s action/horror trilogy Insane has been picked up by a new developer after THQ dropped it in an attempt to alleviate their increasing financial woes. That’s wasn’t good news, especially since Saints Row dev Volition was the studio that would’ve brought that potentially beautiful game to life. Thankfully, Del Toro didn’t give up on the idea and immediately went out to pitch it to new developers. Apparently, the first studio he pitched it to said yes. Now, we don’t know which developer has taken the reigns of this Lovecraftian IP, but I really, really hope it’s been placed in good hands.
