Review: ‘Hellraiser’ #19

There is something visually disturbing on almost every page of Hellraiser #19. The story arc is layered with subplots and the illustrations are eerily atmospheric. This “Hellraiser” series continues to be an ambitious effort. Back at the helm, Clive Barker maintains his original vision of terror and gore that was established in his novella, “The Hellbound Heart”. This issue will make you forget about the previous sub-par sequels that have plagued the “Hellraiser” franchise. READ MORE

Take A Trip To Hell: Early ‘Hellraiser’ Concept Art!

I’m having trouble finding the actual source of the following (since nobody provides links anymore), but below you’ll find early concept art for the potential Hellraiser reboot, being developed at Dimension Films. The art was designed by Paul Gerrard (Wrath of the Titans, Battle: Los Angeles), and were created for a teaser trailer directed by Mike Le Han (Mrs. Peppercorn’s Magical Reading Room).

Here’s a description of the pitch: “In July Paul Gerrard and Mike Le Han produced a teaser trailer to accompany the pitch document which has many more conceptual designs that revision Hellraiser. Paul designed the new look for Pinhead and was production designer on the shoot and Le Han pulled in all of his film resources and directed the teaser on the new Alex 4:3 camera with anamorphic lenses.

With a crew of 47 an over 100 bloodied extras, the shoot was completed and is now in the depths of post production with a massive amount of VFX work being undertaken. Method Studios, Fugitive Studios and Flipbook Animation are helming the chi/VFX with the talented Glen Southern designing (CG build of) the new Hellraiser box.

When the teaser is complete they’ll be presenting it to Dimension Films along with an outline of the first film story and conceptual art pitch document with the hope to work on rebooting the Hell raiser franchise and bringing it into the 21st Century.

Now, it should be clear that Dimension is actively searching for writers and directors to remake Clive Barker’s classic, so these are just part of a pitch (that could easily be rejected by the incredibly indecisive Wienstein brothers). Platinum Dunes was once in the mix, and there’s no word on what the status is on director/writer duo Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer (My Bloody Valentine, Drive Angry).

Check out three incredible pieces of concept art inside. READ MORE

Review: ‘Hellraiser’ #16

Since the new “Hellraiser” series began, the battle lines have been drawn, the mighty leaders have translocated, and the balance between good and evil has been obliterated. Kirsty is now all alone and has to make a large sacrifice, and the world of Hell is still calling Elliot Spencer. The universe wants them both back in their rightful places. Now is the time for reckoning. READ MORE

If You Could Remake ‘Halloween’ Or ‘Hellraiser’, What Would You Do?

There’s nothing more frustrating to us horror fans than sitting around waiting for some of our beloved slasher icons to make it back to theaters. While the studios continue to pump money into various superhero franchises, the horror legends we grew up loving are sitting on the couch getting fat on Cheetos. Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are sitting pretty on Friday the 13th, while Warners and New Line has A Nightmare on Elm Street and Freddy Krueger in a coma. Then there’s Universal who’s attempting CPR on the Child’s Play franchise with the direct-to-video Curse of Chucky, now in pre-production, and Lionsgate has a January date set for their Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.

This leaves a few other familiar faces that have a home with Bob and Harvey Weinstein’s Dimension Films. While the duo continue develop both a Scream sequel/reboot and TV series, they’ve also set their sights on getting both Pinhead and Michael Myers back in theaters.

Back on April 1 we broke the news that Platinum Dunes was in talks to take the producing reigns on Dimension’s next Halloween installment. (They may have also taken on the Hellraiser remake.) Sources told Bloody exclusively this weekend that, after nearly four months, Dunes is no longer working on either film. We can also confirm that the Weinsteins want to re-remake Halloween.

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left).

The next update will be the Ultimate Horror Challenge: Final Edition – where we take your best new suggestions and use them to get up to 101 films that every horror fan should see! So in addition to your ranking, let us know which films should make the cut! Should newer fan favorites like Frozen or The Devil’s Rejects be included? Should we go back and pick up a few more old-school slashers? You’re shaping the Final 20! Discuss and vote and I’ll tally it up!

There are now 81 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into!

Take The Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! What’s Your Score?

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! There are 61 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into. You can give us your specific count in the comments or yell at us for the films we’ve left out!! The categories are:

1-10 Points: Soccer Mom

11-20 Points: Mildly Adventurous

21-30 Points: Casual Fan

31-40 Points: Hardcore

41-50 Points: Unstable

51-60 Points: Psychopath

Review: ‘Hellraiser’ #14

Clive Barker blows our minds straight to Hell once again in Hellraiser #14. Any protocol or structure that may have held strong in the past has been annihilated, and bedlam has been kicked into full throttle. As the gates dividing Hell and earth slowly dissipate, and good and evil melt together, one wonders if a certain Cenobite has really transformed indefinitely or if anyone can truly change. We’re running out of ways to praise this title because of how consistently good it has been. READ MORE

Review: ‘Hellraiser Annual’ #1

In a single year, Clive Barker has managed to accomplish what may have been impossible for others. He, along with co-writer Mark Miller, has salvaged a formerly dying franchise and resuscitated it completely, taking it even beyond its former glory. Barker has taken us on an excursion, from the four corners of the earth to the hottest pits of Hell, where an intense battle between the two worlds presses on, with only a select few able to regain the balance. Celebrating The Past Year Of Hellraiser

Fans have been waiting since the late 80s for another instalment of Hellraiser brought about by Clive Barker. Over the past year that wish finally came true. BOOM! Studios is now celebrating a triumphant year for “Hellraiser” with a very special “Hellraiser Annual” issue. In this issue, Barker further explores the Cenobite War, and reveals the inner workings of his beautiful/horrible Hell. I have a feeling there are many fans out there who are still ignoring this simply because it’s a comic book, which is a real shame. This annual issue is a great place to see what’s got everyone so excited that Pinhead is back. Check out the five-page preview after the jump.

TV: Got Space On Your DVR? “Hellraiser” Series On The Way

HellraiserSeries40212 TV: Got Space On Your DVR? Hellraiser Series On The Way

Like Hellraiser? More specifically the first two films in the series? Then you may be in luck since Variety is reporting that Sonar Entertainment (previously RHI Entertainment) is developing “Hellraiser” for the small screen along with some of the franchise’s early principal players.

Per Variety “Sonar is co-developing with Eric Gardner’s Panacea Ent. “Hellraiser,” a TV series based on the cult British horror franchise. Gardner will exec produce along with Larry Kuppin, whose company New World Entertainment is behind the first two ‘Hellraiser’ pics.

Sonar announced, “One of the most successful (and terrifying) franchises in film history is ready for its weekly television debut. For over 25 years, fans have followed the exploits of an insidious villain named Pinhead, summoned from a nightmarish underworld by an ancient puzzle box. He will seduce you with power and tempt you with fear, until your soul belongs to him.
Now, for the first time, a weekly series set in the fantastic realm of Hellraiser will thrill audiences worldwide.

There’s no word on a network yet, not that there needs to be since the series isn’t actually in production yet. Still… could be cool for you Hellraiser fans if it ever comes to fruition. Either way it can’t be worse than the last movie. READ MORE
