Another Clip From ‘V/H/S’ Discovered Via… VHS!!!

With just TWO days until release, Magnet has sent out some promotional V/H/S packages to various press outlets. These sites all get a one-of-a-kind VHS tape that carries a bootleg clip from the “anthology” arriving on VOD platforms this Thursday, August 30. Now, Lawrence Raffel over at Fearnet, and Steve Barton at Dread Central have both uncovered the same clip, with corrected audio! Since these clips really are playing on VHS players – the only option many people have is to tape them from their phone!

When a group of petty criminals is hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room, a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

Filmmakers involved in V/H/S include Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Red Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with YouTube sensations Radio Silence.

These sites all get a one-of-a-kind VHS tape that carries a bootleg clip from the “anthology” arriving on VOD platforms this Thursday, August 30. And it appears that Ryan Turek from Shock Till You Drop was the first one to hook his player up and convert analog to digital! He uncovered a clip from David Bruckner’s (absolutely nuts) segment, “Amateur Night”.

[Fantasia '12] Lonmonster’s Mini-Reviews #2: ‘The Pact’, ‘Citadel’, ‘Resolution’ & ‘Toad Road’

The 16th annual Fantasia Film Festival is underway in Montreal, Canada. The festival is so packed this year that it’s overwhelming to even begin looking at the film schedule. The horror lineup spans across subgenres and budgets and this is precisely what makes Fantasia so special. Giving equal attention to major productions and low budget indie films, Fantasia has something for everyone.

In its 16th year, there are over 160 screenings during the three-week festival, and it would be insane to even attempt reviewing them all. I’ve been running to the various theaters to catch each flick, and I still can’t watch them all. Although it would be ideal to write full reviews, it would take way too many days, and way too many cups of coffee. What follows are mini-reviews on what I’ve seen so far at Fantasia 2012 including The Pact, Citadel, and Toad Road. READ MORE

First Theatrical Dates And Locations For ‘V/H/S’ Announced!!

I don’t have to tell you that I love V/H/S. If I hated it I’d merely skulk around silently and let its release pass me by. But, fact is, the movie’s a lot of fun! It’s insanely gory and somewhat sexually disturbing in all the right ways (so much so that I’m kinda surprised it’s not NC-17). Anyway – it comes out on various VOD platforms on August 31st, which is a perfectly acceptable way to check out the film. But if you want the real experience, you’ve got to be in a room full of screaming people. That’s where the theatrical release, which starts on October 5th, comes in. And now we have the initial list of theaters where it will be playing and when it will be playing them.

Featuring the likes of Bloody Disgusting favorites Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Red Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with YouTube sensations Radio Silence, the quasi-anthology also plays the Toronto After Dark summer series, Fantasia Film Festival and the UK Film4 FrightFest this summer.

The Red Band ‘V/H/S’ Trailer Is Finally Here! Tell Us What You Think!

Holy crap we’re excited. Both Tom and myself produced V/H/S (become a fan on Facebook), a new kind of horror anthology that Magnet/Magnolia will release on VOD August 31 and in limited theaters October 5. It’s our first major endeavor that sort of shocked us and caught us off guard with the amount and love and support it’s been getting. We apologize that we’ve been so cryptic over the past year, but it’s just not in our blood to celebrate ourselves. The site’s always been about the horror community as a whole, and frankly, all that matters to us is that we don’t fail you. (We just want to leave the legacy that we did things the “right way”). We’re proud of our little film and hope that it earns your gory nod of approval.

Now that we’ve finally shared the official poster, this evening Yahoo! has premiered the long-awaited trailer. Finally we have footage to share that will take you into the collective minds of Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Red Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with YouTube sensations Radio Silence!

Also, here’s Magnolia’s newly released synopsis: “When a group of petty criminals is hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room, a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

The trailer is quite revealing but also absolutely fantastic, IMO. What do you guys think? We’re dying to know what your thoughts are at this point…

Crazy Good New ‘V/H/S’ Poster Organizes Your Tapes By Skull

Sundance hit V/H/S was picked up during the fest by Magnolia Pictures genre label, Magnet Releasing. Magnolia’s normal VOD-before-theaters model will be in play when V/H/S hits VOD on August 31st 2012 a few weeks before debuting in theaters on October 5th. With the film looming on the horizon, we’re starting to see some promo material emerge. Case in point? This old-school poster that Movies.com got their hands on.

In the film, “a group of misfits hired to burglarise a house to find a rare VHS tape, only to find more found footage than they wanted to see.” The directors are Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with YouTube sensations Radio Silence.

And yes, in full disclosure the Bloody-Disgusting co-founders had a major hand in making the film. But we’re allowed to be frank here – if I didn’t like this movie I wouldn’t compliment it. But it’s actually a pretty great ride and I can’t wait for a lot more people to see it! Head inside to check out the poster. READ MORE

Official Music Video For ‘V/H/S’ Credit Theme “They Come To Get Us”

As we previously stated, those of you keeping up with V/H/S now know that one of the main goals of the experimental project was for it to be F/U/N. This bled into conversations about the film’s conclusion and how to play out the credits.

While most found footage films end with a lame “fade to black” and no credits, we opted to rock out with some jams ’80s style. The fact of the matter is, we’re not trying to fool you, every viewer knows it’s NOT real. You know?

The idea was to end the film on a high note and have the viewer walk out of the theater with a hop in their step. This is why we chose The Death Set‘s “They Come To Get Us” (purchase) as our end credit theme.

Now it’s time to rock out to the song’s official music video; with a Back to the Future inspired intro, follow The Death Set through the streets of New York with an army of pop culture surrealism in tow…

You can also read Bloody’s own Jon Barkan’s interview with Johnny Siera of the Aussie punk rock band over at BD’s Music Section. You can purchase the sucker over at iTunes. READ MORE

[Sundance '12]: ‘Room 237′ A Gift For ‘Shining’ Obsessives!

Room237Land12612 [Sundance 12]: Room 237 A Gift For Shining Obsessives!

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival last week was Rodney Ascher’s Room 237, an experimental documentary that explores the numerous theories about the real meaning of Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. An we have a review!

Ryan Daley writes in from Sundance, “Many of the ideas presented are preposterous and absurd, but every interview subject has a point or two that’s surprisingly relevant. The film as a whole is insanely thought-provoking. And more importantly, whether it’s discussing subliminal Hitler mustaches or implied erections, Room 237 is consistently entertaining. But this is coming from someone who has seen ‘The Shining’ more than 20 times.

From the official site, “‘Room 237′ is a subjective documentary that explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation, and mystery. Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Together they’ll draw the audience into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends, many ways in, but no way out…

[Sundance '12]: UPDATE – Does ‘West Of Memphis’ Have New Evidence In Real Life Murder Case?

MemphisLand12012 [Sundance 12]: UPDATE Does West Of Memphis Have New Evidence In Real Life Murder Case?

UPDATE: A press release from Damien Echols’ legal team, regarding the new case information detailed in the film, is after the jump.

Premiering today at the Sundance Film Festival is a new documentary written and directed by Academy Award nominated filmmaker, Amy Berg (Deliver us From Evil) and produced by first time filmmakers Damien Echols and Lorri Davis, in collaboration with the multiple Academy Award winning team of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. West Of Memphis tells the untold story behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light. This of course is all about the (now proven in court) erroneous incarceration of the “West Memphis Three”.

Now, there are emerging reports that the documentary actually presents new evidence in the murder case. Per Deadline, “I’m hearing rumblings here in Park City that the Sundance documentary West of Memphis will include some new important evidence obtained within the last month that could have direct bearing on the future of the case… Press that screened the film in New York and Los Angeles last Friday were told that a scene was missing from the movie, but weren’t given specifics. I’m hearing the new scene will be included in the print of the film shown for the first time at Sundance this morning at 8:30 AM at a press and industry screening at the Holiday Village. The film has its official premiere today at 4:45 PM at the MARC Theater.

In the film, “starting with a searing examination of the police investigation into the 1993 murders of three, eight year old boys Christopher Byers, Steven Branch and Michael Moore in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, the film reveals the story from the inside. West of Memphis uncovers new evidence surrounding the arrest and conviction of the other three victims of this shocking crime – Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley; all three of whom were teenagers at the time of their arrests and all three of whom were imprisoned for crimes they did not commit.

[Sundance '12]: ‘V/H/S’ Filmmaker Ti West On ‘The Innkeepers’ And Reinvigorating Found Footage!

[Sundance 12]: V/H/S Filmmaker Ti West On The Innkeepers And Reinvigorating Found Footage!

Ti West has been building himself up as a brand name the past few years by writing and directing (and editing) a series of horror films that pull you into their unique atmosphere and let you spend time with their characters before turning the scares up to full volume. House Of The Devil gained him a new loyal fan base and The Innkeepers (which hits theaters on February 3rd) is sure to expand it.

As one of the writers and directors of V/H/S – a found footage movie that reinvigorates the stagnant genre – he was able to challenge himself yet again by eschewing his more traditionally formal cinematic aesthetic.

In the film, “When a group of misfits is hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found footage than they bargained for.

Top Secret Bloody Disgusting Horror Film Revealed: ‘V/H/S’!!!

Top Secret Bloody Disgusting Horror Film Revealed: V/H/S!!!

With The Woman now in theaters across the country, I was interviewed by the LA Times (it was super weird, especially considering the only people I’m comfortable talking to are you guys) who broke the news about a top secret project we’ve been working on for the better part of the year (with even more info in this second article). I guess it’s time to let the cat out of the bag (and then gut it).

The Bloody Disgusting/Collective/Site B feature production is called V/H/S and in currently in production.

The best way to describe it without giving anything away is that it’s a new kind of found footage horror film from the perspective of several genre filmmakers we personally know and love.

So who is part of the madness, you ask? Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with Radio Silence, the YouTube sensations formerly known as Chad, Matt and Rob (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella)!

Not too shabby, eh?!

We’re really, really excited to share this labor of love with you guys and hope to have something ready come 2012. We’ll keep you guys posted, and thank you for your support over the past decade. (I can’t believe it’s been nearly 11 years already.) Hopefully we’ll make you proud, because frankly, that’s all we care about.

Mondo Video Presents ‘Things’

Intervision, dedicated to releasing obscure genre gems, has teamed up with Mondo once again to release a limited edition VHS of the first Canadian shot-on-Super 8 gore flick, Things. The 1989 shocker is “the surreal saga of two friends who visit a remote cabin, only to discover a womb of monstrous horror that demands graphic dismemberment. It’s an inexplicable orgy of eye ripping, beer guzzling, boob baring, skull drilling, sandwich making, chain sawing, bad acting and post-sync dubbing.” It follows in the foot steps of Sledgehammer, which was also released on limited Edition VHS through Mondo Video back in May.

Intervision released Things on DVD today, complete with over four hours of bonus material including video testimonials from iconic horror auteur Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun) and more. But for those who still own a VCR and are dying for a hearty dose of nostalgia, Mondo will be selling the VHS through their site tomorrow at a random time. Like their poster releases, these will go fast so if you want one, make sure you start stalking their twitter account (@MondoNews) once you get up. There’s no word on how limited the run is or what it’ll cost you, but there were only 100 Sledgehammer VHS produced (for $20 a pop) and they went for over $100 on eBay a few days days later.
