Review: ‘Revival’ #8

After a really strong issue last month, Revival comes back with a fairly mediocre one. It’s a necessary issue that lays the groundwork for events to unfold later and – most importantly – serves to develop some ancillary characters. But by and large, there’s nothing particularly gripping about “Revival” #8, in large part due to a lack of focus on any one particular plotline. READ MORE

Paramount Pictures has provided Bloody Disgusting with the first theatrical poster for Marc Forster’s World War Z, their zombie movies raising the dead on June 21. Check ‘em both out inside.

Starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox and David Morse, the one-sheet displays a mile-high piling of rotting, decaying zombies attacking a helicopter.

[TV] Am I In An Undead Nightmare? “The Walking Dead” Hires New Writers For Season Four.

I am so sick of talking about the behind-the-scenes shenanigans over at AMC. Without the help of Lionsgate, the cabler has been treading water with their zombie series “The Walking Dead,” having publicly battled writers and showrunners for three seasons now. The show has gotten better, sure, but it’s still nowhere near as good as “Mad Men” or “Breaking Bad”; in fact, I think it’s beyond repair. But whatever, everyone loves it, and I support that. And even through all of these trepidations, AMC is still working their ass off to fix the problems. At least they’re trying.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” is bulking up its writers’ room for season four. Curtis Gwinn and Channing Powell will join Matt Negrete on the staff of the zombie drama under new showrunner Scott Gimple. Supervising producer/writer Gwinn counts Adult Swim comedy NTSF:SD:SVU and MTV’s zombie parody Death Valley among his credits, while co-executive producer/writer Powell — like Negrete — is a White Collar alum.

The duo join a staff that also includes Gimple, who has been with the series since season two, executive producer Robert Kirkman (who created the comics on which the drama is based), Negrete, newly promoted executive producer Greg Nicotero, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, Evan T. Reilly, Angela Kang and Nichole Beattie, among others.

The additions come as “Walking Dead” bulks up following the departure of Glen Mazzara, who exited the series as showrunner in December when the network renewed the series for its fourth season.

[Random Cool] Zombie Edition: Best Undead Convention Makeup EVER; Zombie Perfume; “The Walking Dead” Imagined As A ’90s Show!

The best zombie makeup job to ever walk the halls of a Comic-Con? Yes, I believe so! Freakmo blew my mind on Instagram with a series of photos from her recent excursion to the Perth Comic-Con, Sunday March 10th. “My face was made with Sculpt Gel (2-part silicone paste), acrylic nails, tooth enamel paints, the skin illustrator fx palette, and a few different kinds of fake blood,” she said. “We were swamped by people taking photos all day. Now I know how it feels to be a celebrity ;P” she joked. Check out a series of photographs inside.

Demeter has created zombie-themed scents for both him and her. Says the site: “So you’re a Zombie. Or you know a Zombie. And you might become a Zombie. Any way you slice and dice it, you’ll need different kinds of fragrance. Fragrances that can make the dead simply pass by without offending. Because only Demeter Fragrance Library could make a Zombie fragrance eminently wearable.” How does “Zombie for Him” smell like? “Think forest floor. Zombie for Him is a combination of dried leaves, mushrooms, mildew, moss and earth.” As for “Her”: “A slightly lighter version of the Men’s fragrance with a touch of Dregs from the bottom of the wine barrel for that feminine touch.” Too bad their labels stink.

[BD Review] ‘Zombie Lake’ has a Slow Pace and Dull Story

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper

French filmmaker Jean Rollin left behind a legacy of fantastique films with his signature poetic flourishes, such as The Rape of the Vampire. His 1981 film Zombie Lake, however, is devoid of any creativity or poetic trimmings. It is simply a cheap zombie movie with lots of t&a peppered throughout. Kino/Redemption released Zombie Lake the same day as Jess Franco’s Oasis of the Zombies. That’s certainly no coincidence since they’re pretty much the same movie in different makeup. Both feature Nazi zombies, a bastard child, and World War II. Both movies are crappy and terribly slow, but I did enjoy Zombie Lake a bit more thanks to its frequent zombie attacks and colorful small-town characters.

The story goes back to Nazi-occupied France. The German forces are stomping their ugly boots through a small village when one of the soldiers saves a local woman from a mortar attack. Because love knows no allegiance, the French woman and the Nazi solider make love in the hay. When he returns with his troop nine months later, he discovers that the French woman he banged has suffered complications during childbirth. On her deathbed, she gives the soldier a terribly cheap looking necklace as a token of her appreciation. “You Nazis rolled through my village and killed a bunch of people. Then we banged and now I’m dying from giving birth to your bastard. Here, take this necklace.” Before the Nazis can leave the village, a force of French resistance fighters slaughtered them all and rolled their corpses in the lake.

The village’s mayor tells this convoluted yet tender tale to a journalist interested in writing a story about the “damned lake.” Ever since the incident the lake has been supposedly cursed. We already know it is because the film opens with a Nazi zombies emerging from the lake and killing a naked woman. They seem to have a taste for females who are either naked or in their bikinis. It’s their comfort food. So they bumble around town eating women in various stages of undress and that’s basically the movie.

There’s a tortuously corny subplot involving the soldier from the flashback who’s now a zombie. He finds his illegitimate daughter who recognizes the cheap necklace he’s wearing from a picture of her mother. They hold hands and look fondly at each other. He probably smells awful but that doesn’t seem to bother her. Seeing his daughter brings back the humanity in him and he helps the townsfolk defeat the undead horde. But, let’s be honest, it’s really about naked girls getting eaten.

Rollin’s zombies are some of the most hilarious I’ve ever seen. They’re all painted turtle green but they all have the same heads of hair they dead when they died. The contrast looks absolutely ridiculous. The paint isn’t waterproof either, so when they slog themselves outta the lake it’s all runny and patchy. Because of the heavy makeup around their eye sockets, their eyes look enormous like they’re surprised all the time.

What the movie does have going for it is that it doesn’t feel remotely like a standard zombie movie that’s simply biting Romero. This distinctive vibe could’ve originated from Rollin’s own style, but it feels more like he just had no clue how to make a zombie movie. It was a departure for him that didn’t pay off. I also like the villagers, who have a surly authenticity about them. The pace and dull story absolutely kill the film for me though. Zombie completists will definitely want to check out, but for those hoping for a scare, look away.

A/V

Kino/Redemption Films presents Zombie Lake in a 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer. Like with their Oasis of the Zombies release, there is no digital correction – the minimal amount of dirt, specks, and scratches were left in tact. The colors look great and all of the imperfections serve to enhance the film’s sliminess. The 2.0 audio is free of any noteworthy disturbances and sounds fine.

Review: ‘Revival’ #7

The latest issue of Revival is perhaps the best in the series to date. While it has an interesting side plot that provides a visceral, shocking twist at the end, it’s the focus on the officer Cyprus and her pursuit of Mr. Hine, a reviver, which makes this issue so good. This book is at its best when it examines the impact revival has on the people who have to suffer with its consequences. With issue #7, “Revival” finally begins to live up to the potential we all knew it had. READ MORE
