No Doubt has a lot of great break up songs. But this one trumps them all. And not just because of its title. What’s ironic about me choosing this song for the shock stage is that she straight up says, “I kind of always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend.” But that’s the best shock statement out there. When you’re truly shocked you try to save face by acting like you knew it was coming. Every note of this song drips of sadness and revenge, desperation and apathy, because shock encompasses the majority of the break up emotions. She says she new it. But nothing about the song shows that to be true. It’s the perfect song to start your break up journey.
