River is the king of denial. Both with women and his own self-implosion. But I digress. “El Scorcho” is the best break up denial song because it’s got that magical phrase that we all think at some point during the grieving process: “I think I’d be good for you, and you’d be good for me.” And not only does he ring out those words with grand delusion but he bookends them by saying he pretty much sucks and is a total creep. That’s the best kind of denial. Plus this song just kicks ass. And if you’re going to be in denial, one of the more pathetic stages of breaking up, at least do it in style.
