5. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (Paramount Pictures)
The latest Paranormal Activity, which was a Latino spinoff directed by Christopher Landon, was yet another disappointing entry in the tired franchise. It’s not an awful movie, but it’s infuriating how little the filmmakers moved the needle in a franchise that’s becoming its own parody. I mean, how many times are we going to see the same kind of scares/spooks with a nearly identical finale? This Paranormal Activity does absolutely nothing to further the found-footage sub genre, adds nothing to its mythology, and leads horror fans down such a familiar road that it’s hard not to sleep through it. It’s the FIFTH Paranormal Activity movie, and we’ve yet to see shit hit the fan, or see how the witches interact with the entities. Making the same movie over and over is just lazy, not to mention it’s insulting to horror fans supporting the franchise. I guess we’ll see what taking chances feels like when we witness Paranormal Activity 5‘s “ghost world” (in 3-D).
