Pet Peeve: Movie Trailers That Contain Major Spoilers

Trailer Spoilers

Quarantine Trailer

The biggest offender, however, has to be the 2008 [REC] remake Quarantine, which not only showed the film’s final shot (and multiple deaths) in the trailer, but also used it in all of its marketing material. Maybe the studio assumed that we had all already seen [REC] before Quarantine came out. Who knows? Either way, I don’t understand showing the final shot of a film in its trailer. Birdman’s trailer did the same thing! I just don’t get it. This was another unfortunate instance where the film was short (89 minutes with credits) and had a very simplistic plot, so showing anything beyond the first 15 minutes could technically constitute as a spoiler. Either way, GET CREATIVE. I would be able to forgive showing certain characters’ deaths if they didn’t show the final shot of the movie (or the weird child-like zombie they find in the attic in the final scene).

There are countless other trailers that spoil main plot points as well, but I just don’t get it. I understand that a studio is trying to sell the movie, but is it absolutely necessary to show us crucial scenes, twist reveals or final shots from the movie? Maybe it is. Maybe we are just that difficult to sell movies to. Or maybe trailer editors need to get more creative with the footage they are given. Either way, this is a huge pet peeve of mine. What are some other trailers that ruined movies for you? Let me know in the comments below!
