Resident Evil
Listen, I think the first two films in this franchise are fun. But holy shit they are not like the games at all. Our own Adam Dodd defended Silent Hill and Doom, explaining that they are far more like the games they interpret than we give them credit for. He also defended Resident Evil but mainly because, “…it’s fun. It’s a crazy, gory and sometimes even deliciously cheesy roller coaster ride with a few well-crafted scares, some stylishly choreographed fight scenes and more zombies than you can shake a spiked bat at.” However, he did note that, “…it’s not at all what we expected from a Resident Evil movie in 2002.”
I’m not asking for much. All I want is a Resident Evil movie that focuses more on atmosphere and building a sense of dread than one that focuses on the action and gore. Hell, I don’t even really need a bunch of gore if you give me something that makes me feel as unsettled as the music in the police station of Resident Evil 2 made me feel. Just listen for yourself.
There are obviously directors and filmmakers who are more than capable of creating a film that is a true homage to the roots of this once-great series. Let’s give them a chance.
