Midgårdsormen
Midgårdsormen is a giant sea monster snake in Norse Mythology, which is the child of Loke and a Jætte woman. It is the brother of Fenris wolf and Hel, who rules the kingdom of death. Odin threw Midgårdsormen in the ocean and it is so big that it surrounds entire Midgård. It is Thor’s destiny to fight it, and he encounters it 3 times. The first time the worm has been transformed into a cat and Thor does not know he is actually fighting the biggest monstrous creature. The next he is sailing on the seas and tries to catch it, but fails. The last time is Ragnerok, where he ends up killing it.
Growing up my favorite cartoon was “Valhalla”, an animated Danish film from 1986. The scenes with Thor and Midgårdsormen used to frighten and excite me a great deal. Thor is being tricked by the dark Jætte magic done by Udgårdsloke, the king of Jotunheim. Thor ends up dancing with Udgårdsloke’s mother, an ancient woman who turns out to be death. You see Thor aging very fast and dying in front of the crowd, turning grey and veiny and lifeless. I get inspiration from Norse Mythology and the sagas when I write music. I am interested in nature worship and our pre-christianity pagan religion.
