1. Hostel: Part II
Hostel: Part II takes everything that Hostel did and improved upon it in every aspect. It was gorier, funnier and showed Roth more sure of himself. The wisest choice Roth made was to switch out his trio of leading men for a trio of leading ladies After cleverly dispatching of Jay Hernandez in an opening sequence that is clearly an homage to Friday the 13th: Part 2) we meet Beth (Lauren German), Whitney (Bijou Phillips) and Lorna (Heather Matarazzo) in an art class. What this sequel does so well is A) make the characters likable B) show the story from both the perspective of the victims and the villains and C) have some fun with its premise. From the moment Roth shows us the bidding war between the members of the Club, it’s clear we’re in for something different. Lorna gets the most traumatic death out of all of Roth’s films, and Beth is an awesome final girl, whose table-turning moment in the climax is a great slow clap moment. Hostel: Part II has its detractors, but it’s Roth’s best film.
