The Tale of Laughing In The Dark (Oh, who am I kidding…ALL THE CLOWN EPISODES)
Sure, Pennywise gets a lot of credit for making us afraid of clowns but if you ask anyone who was a kid in the 90s they will likely point to any of the clown episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark. Though I’ve talked about “The Ghastly Grinner” in the past I have to concede that Zeebo is really the first clown that started it all. The story follows Josh, his best friend Weegee (yeah…90s) and younger sister Kathy as they roam through the local amusement park Playland. Sidebar: Where are all these awesome local amusement parks that were displayed in my reading and watching material as a child? Anyway, after some jabs back and forth the three of them decide to go into the world’s scariest “fun”house where they encounter the dreaded Zeebo.
I don’t actually remember a time when clowns weren’t scary because pretty much after 1980 they were morphed into smiling lunatics who want to rip your face off. Fuck clowns.
