The Tale of The Deadman’s Float
Not once did I ever attend a school (outside of University) that had a swimming pool but if I had I’d have spent zero time in there. It’d be full of teenage grime, pee, and possibly a rancid smelling decomposed zombie. This story opens in 1954 while a young boy named Joe is swimming by himself. He begins to smell something awful and is soon dragged under by an unseen being and drowns. Flash forward to 1994 and Zeek the geek discovers the school has closed off the pool and put up a fake wall to block it off. He shows his middle school crush and she decides to petition the school to reopen it since she’s on the swim team. She agrees to teach Zeek how to swim and we soon find out it was built over a cemetery and when they moved the bodies they forgot a couple.
Basically, they turned Poltergeist into a 30-minute tv episode for kids but I didn’t know that at the time so it crept into my sense of dread and has been there ever since. To this day I don’t really like swimming in water that is murky or dark, I’m convinced something will get me.
