Big Game (Anchor Bay)
Hailing out of Finland, Jalmari Helander, who also directed Rare Exports, channels his inner Amblin once again. Big Game follows a young teenager (Onni Tommila) camping in the woods helps rescue the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson) when Air Force One is shot down near his campsite. Filled with heart and even more action, I found this to be one of the most entertaining films I saw this past year. I’m unsure if it’s was done on purpose, but it had a great campy feel that came down to the stage-y set design. Whatever the case, it feels like an authentic throwback that’s filled with great energy.
