Many of you probably heard about the issue Rob Zombie had with the MPAA over his newest film 31, which just had its premiere at Sundance last month (read our review). Of course, this isn’t the first horror film to run into this problem. Usually you see the MPAA being harsher on sexuality in film than violence (which I’ve never really understood), but every now and then they start a torch-wielding mob and go after a random film filled with gore. That being said, we thought we’d list off some horror movies that unfortunately had to be edited in some shape, way or form in order to get a lower rating, be it R or PG-13. Enjoy!
Honorable Mention: Freeway
Due to the fact that Freeway is not a horror movie, I legally (ha ha), I can’t include Freeway, Matthew Bright’s totally bonkers and hilarious modernization of “Little Red Riding Hood,” on this list. I wanted to write about it though so here it is. I’m classifying it as a crime comedy that would qualify as horror if you have a phobia of poverty, white trash, murderers, etc. I fully realize this is a stretch, so feel free to attack me in the comments. Anyway, the film received an NC-17 rating due to graphic language and violence. Many scenes needed to be trimmed in order to obtain an R rating. The uncut version has sadly never been released. Seriously though, if you’ve never seen Freeway, get on it right away. The film is brilliant. Plus, if you watch it you’ll get to see scenes in which Reese Witherspoon (like you’ve never seen her before) do things like this:
