The Moaning Lisa – Resident Evil Remake
There’s an entire generation, maybe two, of gamers who never got to experience the joy of playing the GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil. They might’ve played the remaster — also fantastic — but they missed the enormous rush of joy that many longtime fans of the series felt when this game got us to start believing in miracles again. Capcom took one of the greatest and most influential video games of all time, and remade it in a way that honored the original while simultaneously pleasing everyone involved.
It’s been fourteen years and I’m still getting over this. Unbelievable.
A standout moment in the remake revolved around an exceedingly tragic character named Lisa Trevor, whose father designed the labyrinthine Spencer estate. Forced at a very young age to endure Umbrella’s early experiments with the Progenitor Virus, Lisa would remain an unwilling test subject for decades. She was surrounded by enemies her whole life, her body as disfigured as her broken mind, it’s no wonder she’s moaning ominously from behind a door when we first see her.
All she wanted was to find her dead mother so she could “give her back her face,” but she got blown up instead. Rest in peace, you adorable abomination.
