Fresh off winning an Oscar for Amy Madigan’s villainous performance, Zach Cregger’s Weapons has now received an equally illustrious honor: praise from Steven Spielberg.
In fact, Steven Spielberg tells Empire in a new chat that he found Weapons to be so good and so satisfying that he feels no personal need to make his own horror movie at this time.
“I haven’t directed a horror film yet, and I’ve always wanted to, and someday I may. But there have been some great horror films out already that satisfy that itch,” Spielberg explains.
He continues, “When I see a great horror film like Weapons, I don’t have an itch I need to scratch. I see Weapons, and it doesn’t make me want to make a horror film that’s as scary or scarier than Weapons. It satisfies me so completely, it actually arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie.”
Can there be any higher praise than that? While Spielberg may personally believe he’s never directed a horror movie, he of course did direct horror classic Jaws back in the 1970s; and when the guy who made Jaws is telling you that you made a great horror movie, you probably made a great horror movie. And yes, Jaws is a horror movie. But we won’t argue with you, Spielberg.
Aunt Gladys will soon return to the seen in the tentatively titled film Gladys, a prequel to Weapons that’s being written by Zach Cregger and Zach Shields. Stay tuned for more on that.
But first up, the next film from Zach Cregger is a fresh take on the Resident Evil franchise, with Cregger directing the horror movie for theatrical release on September 18, 2026.
As for Steven Spielberg, he’s of course also got a new movie on the way. Spielberg heads back into the world of aliens with Disclosure Day, only in theaters on June 12, 2026.
