We are in the final days of one of the biggest horror movie months in a long time, with Obsession and Backrooms competing for your box office dollars in the final weekend of May. The new release for the weekend is of course Backrooms, which is one of four brand new horror movies released today that join a previous five new horror movies released on Tuesday.
Here’s all the new horror that released on Friday, May 29, 2026.

Described as Friday the 13th meets 127 Hours, the survival slasher Pitfall is now playing in select theaters ahead of a Digital release at home from Cineverse on June 30, 2026.
In Pitfall, a young man becomes separated from his friends in the woods and plunges into a ten-foot pit lined with spikes, impaling his leg and leaving him helpless. As reality sinks in and his situation grows dire, he realizes the fall wasn’t an accident.

Based on a story by director James Kondelik (Behind The Walls) and a screenplay by Canadian writer Victor Rose, Pitfall made its debut at Los Angeles’ Screamfest Film Festival in October 2025, earning praise from critics, who said it was “one of the major highlights” of the festival’s 25th year. The film was produced by Wai Sun Cheng and Alex Bogolomov for Vancouver-based production Pandapix Pictures in partnership with Dragon Bear Pictures.
The film stars Richard Harmon (Final Destination: Bloodlines), Alexandra Essoe (The Pope’s Exorcist), and UFC champion Randy Couture (The Expendables) as the ruthless killer who stalks his prey in the woods. Marshall Williams (The Ice Road), Jordan Claire Robbins (The Umbrella Academy), and Matt Hamilton (Murder for Sale) also star.

From distributor A24, producer James Wan, and director Kane Parsons, the hotly anticipated liminal horror nightmare Backrooms is now playing in movie theaters nationwide.

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in Backrooms as the owner of Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire, who discovers a strange doorway in the basement of the furniture showroom. He sets out to explore the mysterious, liminal space, walking headfirst into a creepypasta nightmare.
Renate Reinsve (A Different Man) also stars in Backrooms.
YouTube prodigy Kane Parsons makes his feature directorial debut based on his creepypasta-inspired video series, which debuted in 2022 and has amassed over 190 million views to date.

A haunting postpartum psychological thriller from director Chloé Cinq-Mars, the French-Canadian film Nesting has been released on Digital by Breaking Glass Pictures.
The psychological horror movie follows “Pénélope (Rose-Marie Perreault), a new mother struggling with postpartum depression and the lingering trauma of her sister’s death. As sleep deprivation takes hold, the boundary between dream and reality begins to collapse, pulling her into a paranoid and increasingly dangerous spiral.”
Simon Landry-Desy, Saladin Dellers, and Marie Bélanger also star.
Horror movie Nesting made its World Premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival, where Chloé Cinq-Mars won the Best Director Award (2025), launching a successful festival run.

Indonesian master of horror Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Impetigore) produces and presents new Indonesian horror movie sMOTHERed, now streaming only on Shudder.
sMOTHERed is a modern take on the Indonesian folktale Malin Kundang.
“After surviving a terrible accident, renowned micro painter Alif returns home with fractured memories. When an elderly woman appears claiming to be his mother, Alif embarks on a search for the truth uncovering a haunting legacy inspired by the legend of Malin Kundang.”
Kevin Rahardjo & Rafki Hidayat make their feature directorial debut on the folk horror thriller from a script by Hidayat, Joko Anwar, and Aline Djayasukmana.
