Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, unfortunately that doesn’t do much for us here in the States. Machete is the feature-length version of the trailer that originally appeared in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse. The pic is in production in Austin, Texas, with a cast that includes Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez and Rose McGowan. Its story centers on a former Mexican police officer who turns the tables on the masterminds who double-crossed him. Rodriguez, who wrote the screenplay, co-directs with Ethan Maniquis. Sony worked with Rodriguez on the so-called Mexico Trilogy — El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
