The Evil Within
Because The Evil Within gives me what I’ve been asking for since Resident Evil 4 blew my mind back in 2005, I find myself more willing to overlook its imperfections. It lacks a level of polish in the way it controls and its presentation that isn’t really acceptable for a AAA video game released near the end of 2014, and it can try too hard to be scary, but other than that, it’s really good.
What Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and his Tango Gameworks studio did is build a foundation for what could become gaming’s next great horror franchise. It blends the old with the new in some really satisfying ways, and its terrifying world and the nightmare creatures that inhabit it are scary and/or icky enough to stick in your mind long after you’ve beaten it.
