While news about the Friday the 13th reboot pops up more often than not lately, any word on the hourlong TV series has been scant. I think the last time we ran anything about it was back in May of last year, when Sean S. Cunningham was announced as the producer and that Tommy Jarvis might be involved.
Now a website called Horror Domain alleged that TBS may be the channel bringing Jason Voorhees to the small screen. Their source says that the network has green lit 13 episodes and that the series will “push the boundaries as far as violence and gore on basic cable.” Production on the series is set to begin in April. It turns out that the aforementioned website has been had, and that this story in complete bullshit. (Update March 8, 12:22PM PST)
TBS isn’t really known for its original programming (props for picking up Conan though). They show like six hour blocks of The Big Bang Theory and the almighty Seinfeld, but as far as originals go they run stuff like the miserable reality shows King of the Nerds and Deal With It. Friday the 13th could be just what the station needs to start competing with the heavy-hitters like AMC and FX.
Here’s what has already been announced about the Friday the 13th the TV series:
Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment are producing with Sean S. Cunningham.
Bill Basso (Terminator) and Jordu Schell (Avatar) have been set to script “a storyline that re-imagines Jason in multiple time periods.”
Roy Knyrim (Gods and Monsters) of SOTA FX will coordinate the special make-up effects for the series.
The series is set to tell the story of Pamela and Jason Voorhees as flashbacks.
And, of course, it takes place at Camp Crystal Lake.
