It’s Not a Lake; It’s an Ocean
As bonkers as that beginning of its first chapter was, Alan Wake ended by setting up another story, to be continued in the two story expansions that followed. The “It’s not a lake; it’s an ocean” statement might not immediately make sense — because it’s unabashedly bonkers — but it’s intriguing enough to stick with you until the realization kicks in.
When Alan is trapped in the Dark Place, he doesn’t join the ranks of Taken, but he does have a possessed quality about him when he utters those famous words that give us an idea of just how far the Darkness’ influence and power really reaches. It’s a trippy end to a trippy game that could’ve proved frustrating without The Signal and The Writer.
