With production on Kong: Skull Island beginning next week, Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures are starting to visualize a future that includes both King Kong and Godzilla.
The two titans will eventually go head-to-head when Godzilla vs Kong hits theaters in 2020.
While it’s to be seen if Pacific Rim mixes into the equation, right now Kong: Skull Island is targeting March 10, 2017 with Godzilla 2 arriving on June 8, 2018.
After bringing both Godzilla and King Kong back to theaters, then the duo will battle in one epic movie in 2020.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts is directing Kong: Skull Island, which stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham and Toby Kebbell.
Gareth Edwards will direct Godzilla 2, which I pray is better than the reboot.
I think we’re in good hands with Legendary, and I love that there’s a long-term vision for this franchise that will eventually leak into the Universal theme parks. Us giant monster fans are about to grow old with two of the best! Is there anything you expect to see in the coming movies that would just send you over the moon?
When Legendary announced films centered on Godzilla and Kong, fans all over the world speculated these two characters might one day meet in the same film. Classic Toho monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, as announced at Comic-Con 2014, may also join the Legendary pantheon of giant monster mayhem going forward.
