Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Rampage’ Getting Rewritten

Published

on

New Line Cinema is pumping tons of quarters into the video game-to-film adaptation of Rampage as it’s been announced by Variety that “Colony” executive producers Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condal have been tapped to rewrite the film, which is being directed by Brad Peyton and produced by Beau Flynn.

The director & producer combo are joined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Doom, Furious 7), who worked with the duo previously on the big earner San Adreas. No details are coming out yet about how the film is going to play out.

The original game allowed players to select either George the Gorilla, Lizze the Lizard, or Ralph the Werewolf and then embark on a mission to destroy city after city, which allowed us to live out our Godzilla-esque fantasies.

Thinking about it, I can see this movie going one of two ways. First idea: it’s super serious and becomes a 2014 Godzilla style film that’s dark, gritty, and shows how the destruction can truly affect and destroy the lives of people. On the other hand, what if the film was almost like a joke and completely embraced the ridiculousness of the game? What if it instead took inspiration from the 1998 Godzilla and slapped a heavy dose of humor and jocularity into the mix?

Either way, I think this movie could be seriously entertaining. And considering that the point of the game is to destroy multiple cities, I think a big expansive movie that uses a lot of CGI makes sense as we’re hopefully going to see destruction on a national level.

No matter what, I’ll be there!

They Follow Disasterpeace

Maika Monroe (Longlegs) isn’t the only one reuniting with It Follows director David Robert Mitchell on the sequel They Follow. The filmmaker revealed key collaborators are also joining the project.

Speaking with Empire, Mitchell confirmed that multiple crew members are returning for the sequel, and that it’ll feature a new score from Disasterpeace!

Maika is back for this, and [cinematographer] Mike [Gioulakis], and the editor, Julio [C. Perez IV],Mitchell told the outlet.Disasterpeace will be doing a score.

That’s great news, considering how impactful the artist’s score was on the original 2014 film. Mitchell agrees:I wouldn’t want to do a sequel without him. That first movie is so much to do with his fantastic music, so I’m excited about seeing what he does with this.

The filmmaker notes that he’s also proud of his script for They Follow, which will do its own thing while still being connected to the original film. Of course, plot details remain scarce at this time.

It’s very dark,” Monroe recently teased. We’re pushing the boundaries on this one for sure.

In the first movie, Maika Monroe’s Jay Height is a young woman followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter. In the sequel, the threat is now EVERYWHERE.

Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice) is reportedly joining the sequel.

NEON and Good Fear Content are producing They Follow.
