There’s a lot of fun to be had when watching snakes terrorizing unsuspecting victims, but like many horror movies featuring animal antagonists, they often lean into the campy realm more than being outright unsettling. Movies like Anaconda, Python, and Snakes on a Plane are certified crowd pleasers, though it’s hard to argue any of them actually get under our skin. Luckily, filmmakers aren’t entirely giving up on the possibility of using the reptiles to unsettle us, as proven by the upcoming Beware Boiúna.
Tickets for the new movie from Mike P. Nelson have just gone on sale ahead of the movie’s October 2 release. To celebrate, Lionsgate has released an all-new trailer for the movie, which you can see below.
The movie is described, “Deep in the Amazon, a medical mission spirals into a fight for survival when Boiúna, a colossalancient predator, awakens to reclaim her domain. In the jungle where nature holds absolute power, she decides who lives and who dies.” Beware Boiúna stars Kiana Madeira, Jessica Rothe, and Logan Marshall-Green.
The trailer spotlights some of the early praise the movie has been earning, with Bloody Disgusting‘s own Meagan Navarro giving the movie a 4 out of 5. In her review out of Fantastic Fest, she says, “Beware Boiúna easily rises to the top of a limited subgenre for its well-staged thrills and breathless action, all anchored by well-developed characters. [Writer Alan McElroy] and Nelson smartly keep the focus on the dramatic conflicts and human sieges that Boiúna’s onslaught nearly catches you off guard. It makes for a highly entertaining, nail-biting creature feature that firmly holds you in its grip, even as it savagely rips apart nearly everything in its path.”
With last year giving us a meta reboot of Anaconda, in which Jack Black and Paul Rudd starred as characters who grew up with a campy love of the Jennifer Lopez-starring original, Beware Boiúna looks like it wants to course-correct from merely making any snake-themed horror come with a heaping helping of irony. Whether it will effectively accomplish that goal, however, is yet to be seen.
Beware Boiúna hits theaters on October 2.
