“Pretty Little Liars: Summer School” First Look Images Tease Slasher Sequel Fun and New Female Villain

The slashing that began with “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” will continue in Max’s upcoming “Pretty Little Liars: Summer School,” and Cosmopolitan unveiled first look images at the upcoming second season that promises to go bigger and badder on the slasher sequel mayhem.

“Pretty Little Liars: Summer School” is set to return later this Spring on Max, with first look images below.

Co-Creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Riverdale,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) and Lindsay Calhoon Bring (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) co-executive produced and wrote the new series.

Season 1 picked up 20 years after a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago…as well as their own.

The second season will pick up almost immediately after the events of season one, with “A” leaning into summer horror to a lethal degree.

“It’s almost a direct pickup from the end of season 1. We end sort of on Christmas Eve, with our amazing last tag kill which is A killing Chip and A on the loose. And then we pick up Christmas morning with Imogen and Tabby unwrapping Christmas gifts with Tabby’s mom and getting a panicked phone call,” cocreator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Cosmopolitan. “And that’s all in the first minute of the episode so we are definitely picking up right where we left off in a really pulse-pounding way.”

Aguirre-Sacasa also teased this season’s killer, “Our villain is a female figure of horror, which is something we really wanted to explore in our female-centered horror show. We also wanted our villain to feel quite apocalyptic and terrifying. And because most of our season is set during summer—besides taking inspiration from from our favorite slashers—we wanted it to feel a little more apocalyptic, like something like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre or even Midsommar. There’s a lot of really horrific imagery tied to movies like that and we wanted to tap into those a little bit. And we also knew we had to make a villain scarier than A and it was pretty scary in season 1.”

Expect to see the horror forward series continue to lean into a plethora of notable influences, with this season embracing the slasher sequel in a big way. The co-creators cite Scream 2, Halloween II, and Friday the 13th Part 2 as some of the more prominent influences on this season.

Bailee Madison also stars as Imogen Adams, Chandler Kinney as Tabby Haworthe, Zaria as Faran Bryant, Maia Reficco as Noa Olivar, Mallory Bechtel as Karen/Kelly Beasley, Sharon Leal as Sidney Haworthe, Elena Goode as Marjorie Olivar, Eric Johnson as Sheriff Tom Beasley, Alex Aiono as Shawn Noble and Lea Salonga as Elodie Honrada.

The original “Pretty Little Liars” series ran for seven seasons from 2010 to 2017, and it was followed by two short-lived spinoff shows. You can catch up on the original series, available on Max now, as well as “Original Sin”, ahead of “Summer School” arriving this Spring.

Welcome to Derry

Max series “Welcome to Derry” will be bringing a familiar face back to terrorize the children: Bill Skarsgård is set to reprise his role as Pennywise in the prequel series, Deadline reports tonight.

The upcoming series will premiere sometime in 2025. The series will be a prequel to the two Stephen King-based IT movies from Andy Muschietti.

Skarsgård is set to star in and executive produce. The actor joins the previously announced cast of Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (“Watchmen”), Chris Chalk (“Perry Mason”), James Remar (Oppenheimer), Madeleine Stowe (Revenge) and Stephen Rider (Daredevil).

Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs are on board the Pennywise prequel project from Warner Bros. Television, with Muschietti set to direct four episodes of the nine-episode series.

The series will begin in the 1960s in the time leading up to the events of It: Part One, the 2017 film based on the Stephen King horror novel. The story is also said to include the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.”

Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman, Ice Age: Continental Drift) and Brad Caleb Kane (“Moonhaven,” “Black Sails,” “Fringe”) will serve as co-showrunners for the prequel series.

Published in 1986, Stephen King’s massive novel was of course first turned into a mini-series in 1990, with Tim Curry playing the role later played by Bill Skarsgård in the movies. The tale centers on the town of Derry, Maine, where a group of friends called the Losers’ Club battle Pennywise the killer clown first as kids, and then 27 years later as adults.

This marks Skarsgård’s return to King’s TV universe, as he previously starred in Hulu series “Castle Rock.”

Stay tuned for additional details on the series as they arrive. In the meantime, you can see Skarsgård in this year’s Boy Kills World, and look for his take on The Crow in August.
