Starbreeze Introduces Lower-Priced “Starter Edition” of ‘Overkill’s The Walking Dead’

Published

With the so-so reception to Overkill’s The Walking Dead, and the subsequent low sales prompting Starbreeze to impose cost-cutting measures, this next bit of news is no surprise.

In an effort to strengthen sales of the game, Starbreeze and developer Overkill have decided to release a Starter Edition of the game. The $30 Starter Edition is 50% cheaper than the original version, and gives players access to everything in season 1, which is essentially all of the content the game had at launch.

In a Steam post, Overkill states that with the Starter Edition, “we can now offer a more accessible price point with the flexibility to choose what content to go for as we continue to expand Overkill’s The Walking Dead. This is great for players who want to test the waters, or for any of your friends who want to give it a shot.”

If you buy the Starter Edition then you will have to purchase story episodes from season 2 and beyond for their regular price. This includes the newly-released No Sanctuary DLC. As a plus, Starter Edition owners will be able to play new episodes if they get invited to a game by a friend that owns those episodes. However, Starter Edition owners won’t have access to the new characters or weapons specific to that episode, or be able to play the episode through regular matchmaking.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead is available now on Steam, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions being released on February 6, 2019.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
