‘Silent Hill’ Art Director Masahiro Ito Says Pyramid Head’s Background Was Inspired by ‘Braveheart’

Silent Hill art director Masahiro Ito recently took to Twitter once again and dropped some behind-the-scenes nuggets of info regarding the making of Silent Hill 2. The topic once again centred on the creation of everyone’s favourite monster in Pyramid Head, whose background was inspired by Mel Gibson‘s Braveheart.

According to Ito, the background of Pyramid Head as the executioner of the town came from the scene where Braveheart is executed (the famous “Freedom!” scene). Specifically, the hooded executioners were the inspiration behind the background of the franchise’s most famous antagonist.

“As to Pyramid Head, the background setting ‘as the executioner in the town’ was definitely inspired by the background character in Braveheart,” says Ito. “[B]ut the background ‘as the character standing against James’ was inspired by this Louis’ quote from Jacob’s Ladder.”

Following that tweet, Ito then went back to a tweet that he had made back in 2017 where Ito had showed off some art from when he was a student that inspired the look of Pyramid Head. “Aft I designed P-Head based on the 1st image in this tweet, I started thinking the background. I remembered the film/that ppl who put a bag on their heads & then I looked the ppl up in books. I finally came up w/ the idea of an executioner of the old town.”

This isn’t the first time that Ito has taken to Twitter to talk about his involvement in the Silent Hill games. Ito has revealed info on Pyramid Head before, as well as other Silent Hill monsters. As for what Ito is up to these days, he last mentioned that he was part of a project that was under NDA back in 2020, which may or may not have been his involvement in the 2020 Halloween event for World of Tanks.

Meanwhile, director of the 2006 Silent Hill film, Christophe Gans, recently gave credence to the rumour that multiple Silent Hill titles are in development, including a remake of Silent Hill 2.

While there’s no definitive release date just yet, Rebellion is teasing fans with a new story trailer for the upcoming Zombie Army VR, which is expected to arrive later this year. The new trailer gives fans and prospective players a glimpse at the Zombie Army VR story campaign, which as you might have guessed, involves occult magic, waves of zombies, and plenty of headshots.

The game’s campaign takes place alongside the events of the Zombie Army series, and sees you take to the field as one of the Deadhunters, an elite squad that is hunting down zombie war criminals. You must fight your way through undead hordes near the bombed-out city of Nuremberg to help Captain Hermann Wolff, the Deadhunter’s legendary leader, find his scattered family and fight to free Europe from the zombie apocalypse.

As you navigate the full-length story campaign either alone or with an ally, you’ll have access to an arsenal of authentic World War II weaponry, including sniper rifles, submachine guns, pistols and more. As one would expect, VR brings a new level of immersion to the action of the Zombie Army series, which will require you to “get to grips” with using your hands to aim your rifle, dual-wield your side arm with a submachine gun, master reloading drills, and tossing grenades.

Zombie Army VR is currently in development for the PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 2, 3, Pro, Oculus Rift and PC headsets via Steam.
