While Lovecraftian horror is great by itself, what if you threw in mutants, a 90s graphical aesthetic, some sci-fi, and cranked out a first-person action-adventure? That’s what publisher/developer TechnoMyth did with Matchstick: Cosmic Flame, which has a demo available on Steam and on itch.io.
A time and space bending cosmic intelligence has found its way to Earth. However, its arrival causes your family (and their car) to disappear. In their place is a wormhole, which after you jump into it, takes you to a strange world. You must now face the horrors of this world, and fight off the infected to save your family. Your journey will take you through other wormholes to explore other nightmarish environments, solve cryptic puzzles, and run from demonic entities.
Also, you collect rubber duckies and help what can only be described as a mutant moth find his green bag at a train station. That’s only a one part of the demo, which consists of the first chapter of Matchstick: Cosmic Flame. The demo will take you around a half hour to complete, which should give you a pretty good idea of the game’s creepy atmosphere (amplified by the lo-fi 3D graphics) and equally-creepy soundtrack. Not to mention the sounds of the filing cabinet drawers…
No release date has been announced for the game, but you can wishlist it on Steam.
