ok first off in anticipation for the friday the 13th remake im watchin all the platinum dunes remakes, this is the one that i never saw, until last night, like three years after its release, it was fun to watch at 11 o clock at night under a blanket alone with a nice pint of stout ill give it that, it had its moments , alot of them actually , but one thing i dont understand, ok when they move into the house and the couple are about to seal the deal in the bedroom with eachother( mellissa george is one of the hottest women alive imo, goddamn) why does the little girl appear and hang herself from the bed rail to george lutz , just because its creepy? i can understand the house doing creepy shit granted, but this is a character and SHE WAS FUCKING SHOT! why the hell would her ghost be acting suicidal? plus she is supposed to be the girl that gets left behind to feel sorry for anyway right? that makes absolutley no sense at all to me. to be creepy is not a good enough reason on that one. i still liked thi better than the hitcher though.

Looking back at this film now, had I watched it only recently, I wouldn’t have expected much, but this film is, for Hollywood remake standards, exceptional. It’s one of the most terrifying films I have ever witnessed, has some very good acting and has a reasonably short running time, which is always good. Don’t be put off by much of Michael Bay’s other…terrible films, this one is certainly worth watching if you like the pants literally scared off you.

When I first heard of this coming to theaters in 2005 and that Ryan Reynolds was in it I thought that either I heard wrong or this movie was going to be so far from it’s original that I had little hope for it. Don’t get me wrong, I like Ryan Reynods and think he is funny, I just thought it was not the right fit for this type of movie. I was wrong, he did a superb job. The remake overall was very well done and have confidence in Friday the 13th now.

    HEY
Did anybody notice the fact that they just added arbitrary elements to a great story that should have been left alone? Or that they took REAL PEOPLE and turned them into Hollywood stereotypes? Cut it out people… go watch the original and remember how life was in the 1970′s…

well to start off i was extremely pleased with this movie. having really enjoyed the original this remake was up to par. def not better. the original held a place in my heart for some reason. ryan reynolds did a really good job. but i am sorta sick of seeing these big producers like micheal bay taking these classics and remaking them. use your money and good sense of movie making to make something that is unique and original.

all in all i did enjoy this.

Not having seen the original, I can’t judge it based on that. But I do not understand the hype and the acclaim for this movie. I found it extremely paint-by-numbers, to the point of being my head against the wall. Not only did we SEE the killings but then we’re told what we just saw AGAIN. I called every kill, every scene, before it happened. (Again, not having seen the original.) It was extremely predictable, boring, and dull. There is little common sense in this movie. (Such as the parents leaving their children with a “babysitter” that looks like a porn actress without so much as a second thought.) IMO, Reynolds needs to stay out of the horror scene. The FX was shoddy and ridiculous. All in all, I hated this movie and found it more amusing than anything else. Watch at your own risk.

Though not as scary as the original Amityvile, it is still worth watching. I enjoyed the fact that it’s not a shot for shot remake, and that the creators added their own elements to the story. An enjoyable possesion/ghost story.

It sucked. Not a patch on the original and completely pointless, with a barely feature length running time of – 89 minutes! A cash milking rip off, nothing more.

`The Amityville Horror’ is a 2005 Remake of the Original 1979 movie (which it’s also based on the 1977 novel of the same name by Jay Anson) based upon true event that happen On November 13, 1974, at 3:15am, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed his family at their home, 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville. He killed five members of his family in their beds, but his youngest sister, Jodie, had been killed in her bedroom closet. He claimed that he was persuaded to kill them by voices he had heard in the house. (If this is based on a True story then I can proudly say that I just love the Amityville Horror & would love to go to Amityville USA & see that house in person).

This Movie is very rare because I find it to be better than the Original (even though I like the Original the Remake just seemed to get more into it, modest improvement over the original Form the special effects & to be more scarier/gory), the movie follows after the murdering of six family members which were the DeFeo that would go do in Amityville as the most bizarre & horrific event of a murdering family in 1974 ever in the history of that small American town, which a year’s then follow the Lutz Family in 1975 whom move in to the old 112 Ocean Ave in Amityville where the DeFeo lived & in just 28 days of living in their new home unexploded things happened & that the amount of terror that did not stop for them. The ending was keep very true to the true event style & dark of how he was soo close to killing his family & whether people believe in it or not something strange & bizarre happen in that house for the past 28 days when the Lutz family moved in & that this house had a poison of obsession of making sure the DeFoe were murder, then soo close of killing the Lutz family (but they managed to escape), the film is one of the very best update Remake of 2005 & of that decade and I really do believe in the Amityville Horror & hope in my life time I would love to go & see that house on 122 Ocean Ave in person.

The Storyline/Plot is excellent to me as I really love The Amityville Horror story (because I think it’s true) & they kept the material/true events on the right path, also the scares, gore, creepiness, eerie setting & freighting in this amazing update remake (for this generation to understand the true event that happened in Amityville 1974), I found the movie to be really thrilling, chilling, always making me jump & just downright cleverly scary (for me), the movie is simple haunted house true event story and makes it totally far up grim, bloody & quit disgusting as the best update remake of the decade (I think) and also I really did like the visual special effects (that made it look soo really, but you can also tell its special effect, while it blend in very well with the movie), Violence & the blood/gore use was great with me being all jolting & feast for more of this enjoyable Remake.

The acting was very strong character performance by a great set of cast that play hugely well in their roles, which were by Ryan Reynolds (was extremely prefect as George Lutz Character), Melissa George, Jesse James, Jimmy Bennett, Chloe Moretz, Rachel Nichols, Philip Baker Hall, Isabel Conner (terrific choice for the dead girl part), Brendan Donaldson & Kara Rubeo, while the directing was simple brilliant capture & character shots (mainly on how George Lutz was begging to go crazy & mad at the house, but outside the house area he was perfectly normal & the evidence on the true event was short very nicely), well done to Andrew Douglas for making such a perfect update remake on the True event story of the Amityville Horror.

im not a big fan of remakes but i actually really liked this one. the film had the original feel (not to mention ryan reynolds looks a lil bit like james brolin back in the day!) and it built up the suspense, plus its actually based on the book.

“Houses don’t kill people, people kill people”. The original 1979 movie starred James Brolin and Margot Kidder as a family that moves into a big beautiful house only to find it has a storied and brutal past. The movie is based on a true story of the most famous haunted house in America. The house itself is a very iconic image in the history of horror movies, almost like the mansion in “Psycho” The movies both old and new are based on the book “The Amityville Horror” by Jay Anson.

Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George take on the lead roles of George and Kathy Lutz, while their little girl Chelsea is played by up and coming superstar Chloe Grace Moretz (“Kick-Ass”, “Let Me In”). Taking place in 1974, George is a building contractor who is looking for a new house for his new instant family. Kathy is a widower with 3 kids so George must really find Kathy special. All kidding aside they find a giant house at a bargain price and wonder what the catch is. Well here it is, they are told a year earlier a family was brutally murdered after living there for 28 days. Things start out great for the family as they usually do, but things don’t stay that way for long. George becomes more angry, more aggressive and begins to lose touch with reality. Is it the house or is he just in a little over his head with what’s going on in his life? This movie also loads on the typical horror clichés. It has a cold and creepy basement, freaky kids up to no good, old priests who have lost their faith and get attacked by flies, you know the usual.

Chelsea has a new imaginary friend in Jodie, who might not be all that imaginary (or alive for that matter) Kathy also starts to see and hear things. After witnessing the changes overcoming George she consults the local priest played by the great Phillip Baker Hall. We get a little more back story on the house, but the priest role is pretty underused. While in the house George feels physically ill and his mental state starts to quickly erode, until he finally loses it. I know this isn’t the greatest movie, but for a horror remake it does the job and doesn’t crap all over the original. Ryan Reynolds is known more for his comedic roles, but he is also a good dramatic actor (see “Buried”).

There are countless sequels and other “Amityville” horror movies but the original and this remake are the ones to watch.

Official Score: 4 / 5
