FRIDAY THE 13TH : JASON TAKES MANHATTAN

Jason Voorhees is one step closer to a return as Breck Eisner is in talks to direct the next installment of Friday the 13th for Platinum Dunes and Paramount Pictures, Bloody Disgusting can confirm.

Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski turned in his screenplay last month, which Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller called an “origin-ish” story.

Jason’s mother, Pamela, is going to make some sort of appearance in the new incarnation, as is his father, Elias (I’m told he’s actually in the script quite a bit).

We’re going to go back and we’re going to meet that family,” Fuller told Yahoo back in June, speaking of the Voorhees clan. Form confirmed, adding, “We’re going to meet the family. You’re gonna meet Pamela, Elias, and Jason. And you’re gonna see how it all happened.

Eisner directed The Crazies, a fantastic remake of George A. Romero’s classic horror film, as well as Lionsgate’s The Last Witch Hunter, which starred Vin Diesel. He was spent years attached to direct a remake of The Creature From the Black Lagoon for Universal, as well as Escape From New York for New Line.

David Bruckner was previously attached to direct from a screenplay by Nick Antosca. While Eisner is a less inspired pick than Bruckner, I’m definitely not shaking my head at the decision. I’d give it a solid B+.

As of this writing the plan is for Jason to return on Friday, January 13, 2017, although October 13th, 2017 is more likely.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
