[Interview] Joshua Hale Fialkov Turns The Tables In ‘I, Vampire’

I, Vampire is another one of those DC Dark titles that took everyone by surprise at the launch of the New 52. It’s a risky superhero horror mashup about immortal vampire ex-lovers at war. In the hands of writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and artist Andrea Sorrentino, “I, Vampire” began as an under the radar critical success, and has since become a New York Times Bestseller.

In the latest arc of “I, Vampire”, which begins tomorrow in issue #13 (preview here), Fialkov flips the role of protagonist and antagonist. Andrew Bennett becomes the villain, and his ex-lover Mary becomes the hero. BD spoke with Fialkov about taking risks in writing, how to keep vampires interesting in modern comics, his experience with the New 52, and plenty more. READ MORE

[Exclusive] Preview: ‘I, Vampire’ #13

Joshua Fialkov turns the tables in I, Vampire #13, completely swapping the roles of protagonist and antagonist. In the aftermath of the zombie vs. vampires war, Andrew Bennett looks to build an evil army for the ages, and the only one willing to step in his way is ex-lover Mary, Queen of Blood. “I, Vampire” is a delightful take on vampirism, having its foundations set in traditional vampire lore. Of DC’s Dark books, “I, Vampire” continuously comes out on top, and I imagine things will only get crazier as the series continues into another year.

“I, Vampire” #13 is a perfect jumping on point and below, you can check out our exclusive preview. The issue drops on October 24th, 2012. READ MORE

[NYCC '12] David Goyer And Geoff Johns Team Up For A 13-Issue DC Comics Event

David S. Goyer, who is now better known for co-writing the Dark Knight Trilogy with Chris Nolan, is making his long-awaited return to comic writing. Announced during his Da Vinci’s Demons panel, Goyer spilled the beans that him and long-time collaborator, Geoff Johns have been planning to write a big event within the DC universe. He said, “I have plans to do something with Geoff Johns that’s been on the drawing books for a while. Basically, [we're] just looking for the time to plot it out. DC is holding the space for it, it’s an event that we’re going to do, it’s a 13-issue thing. Hopefully, we’ll start plotting it out this fall.” Look for his return to comics within the coming year. [Interview] Matt Kindt Drags ‘Frankenstein’ Into ‘Rotworld’

Matt Kindt has established himself as an indie cartoonist, known for his existential, gutsy espionage comics like “Mind MGMT” and “Super Spy”. However, Kindt recently took over writing duties from Jeff Lemire on Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. from DC Comics. “Frankenstein” was one of those books that readers wrote off when the solicitations were first announced for the New 52, but it has since become one of the quirkiest titles in their catalog.

Starting this week with issue #13, Kindt brings Frankenstein into the Animal Man/Swamp Thing crossover event, “Rotworld”. Kindt and artist Alberto Ponticelli place Frank right in the midst of the action for an all out battle against disgusting Rot-monsters. Kindt took the time to chat with BD about the upcoming crossover, his experience writing for DC, and his plans for the future of “Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E.” READ MORE

Review: ‘I, Vampire Vol.1: Tainted Love’

Readers will be thirsting for more after they get their hands on I, Vampire Vol. 1: Tainted Love. Whether Joshua Hale Fialkov writes a romantically dramatic or action-packed scene, Andrea Sorrentino’s illustrations are always excellently rendered to compliment the story. Though I have not read any of the original “I, Vampire” issues, there is such an appreciation to the source material from J.M. DeMatteis and Tim Sutton that comes right off the pages. The clever writing and darkly captivating artwork make ‘I, Vampire’ one of the hidden gems of DC’s New 52. This is a vampire comic that ranks up there with the best of them. READ MORE

Don’t Forget: Swamp Thing / Animal Man Crossover Begins October 3rd!

We’ve pretty much been waiting for Rotworld since the New 52 began – part of me feels the #0 issue month was a way for DC to make sure the The Swamp Thing/Animal Man crossover landed during Halloween month. This is the first time Snyder and Lemire are partnering for a big event. It will be interesting to see what characters Snyder and Lemire choose to bring back from the “Swamp Thing” mythos, as the covers already show Deadman and Poison Ivy, which is reminiscent of Alan Moore’s famous Annual issues from back in the day. But I won’t waste your time any longer, just thought I’d leave you a reminder so as not to miss out on the event. It all starts tomorrow, October 3rd. READ MORE

Interview: Christy Marx Talks Princesses And Blood Power In ‘ Sword Of Sorcery’

This week, DC Comics released the #0 issue of Christy Marx’ Sword of Sorcery reboot. You may know Marx better for her scriptwork in cartooning over the past thirty years on shows like Jem And The Holograms, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spider-Man, and plenty more. On top of that, Marx has worked extensively with Marvel Comics in the past on “Conan” and “Red Sonja”. “Sword of Sorcery” marks her return to the medium to deliver yet another kick-ass female heroine.

Marx is working to reboot the original 12-issue run on “Amethyst, Princess Of Gemworld” from the 80s, a character who seemingly vanished from the DCU. From the #0 issue, it is already clear that Marx is taking liberties with the series in order to revitalize it for a modern audience. The new series follows a 17-year-old Amy who discovers that she can harness extraordinary powers as the Princess of Gem World. Marx notes that her rendition delves deeper into Amy’s personal issues as she finds herself in an epic battle for the House Amethyst.

We caught up with Marx to chat about her rejuvenation of “Sword of Sorcery”, women in comics, blood powers, and much more. READ MORE

‘Lobo’ Synopsis Sounds Kinda Like A Reverse ‘Men In Black’

While Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has yet to confirm or deny if he’ll be taking the role of Lobo for his Journey 2 director Brad Peyton (despite this hint), it looks like the DC comics adaptation has an official synopsis. One that actually makes it sound like it has a chance of being a fun movie (of a reasonable budget).

Per It’s On The Grid, “Lobo, a powerful alien bounty hunter, lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc.” And – for what it’s worth – the site lists The Rock as starring.

In the comic, “Lobo is an alien that works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. Introduced as a hardened, rarely used hard boiled villain in the 1980s, the character remained in limbo until his revival as an anti-hero biker in the early 1990s, when he became on of the most popular characters in the DC Comics stable.?

No word on a start date yet. READ MORE

In this #0 issue we go way back to hell where Jason Blood has a run in with none of than Lucifer, originally introduced in Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman”. Check out the preview below. READ MORE

All the old DC titles ended, in some way or another, and new books started to fill the shelves of local comic shops. Now that we’ve had a year to reflect on the reboot, let’s talk about the ups and downs, the successes and failures, and imagine what the future holds for the no-longer-New 52. READ MORE
