With each subsequent rewatch, I find myself begging and pleading more and more with David Drayton to wait just a little bit longer before pulling the trigger. Remember, in his mind he has to fulfill the promise he made to his son that he wouldn’t let the monsters get him. He shot all four out of love and that’s what makes the ending so tragic and heart wrenching.
Stephen King himself said that it’s the most shocking ending ever and that he loved it. [Source]
