The Abortion – The Tribe
The Tribe doesn’t technically qualify as a horror film, but it features enough graphic scenes of violence to merit placement on this list. The film is “spoken” entirely in Ukranian sign language with no subtitles, leaving it up to the viewer to determine what is going on. The cast is made up of all real-life deaf actors and actresses. It’s a fascinating film to watch, but also one of the most disturbing. No scene is more difficult to watch than Anya’s (Yana Novikova) illegal home abortion. There is no soundtrack (and obviously no spoken dialogue), so the only sounds being heard are Anya’s moans of pain and the clinking of the “surgeon’s” medical equipment, as well as some especially icky squishy sounds. The scene goes on for several minutes, all in one take. It may be hard to watch, but it’s even harder to hear.
