Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (Animated Series)
This next entry is a bit of a cheat because it’s actually 4 movies and 1 television series but I couldn’t choose just one. I’m of course talking about Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, its 3 sequels and one spin-off Saturday morning cartoon.
This is a series I really love and I’m surprised there hasn’t been a Blu-ray release of at least the first movie. I think Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! is one of the most classic B-movies there is. It’s very cheap, very silly, mostly stupid and a whole lot of fun! You can’t ask for anything more in a low budget B-movie.
Then you have the sequels that mix things up quite a bit, especially Return of the Killer Tomatoes! This second film does a lot of things that are very important in regards to the series going forward. Most importantly it introduces Professor Gangreen who would go on to star in all three sequels and the cartoon, being played by John Astin every time. Gangreen is such a pivotal addition because he is a human actually using the tomatoes to build an army to take over the world. Plus Astin is a little bit of a bigger name that helps give the series a little more credibility. Return of the Killer Tomatoes also features a very young George Clooney in a very funny supporting role which is certainly worth mentioning. This entry is also very self-aware which adds to the humor.
John De Bello directs all 4 films in the series which I think is interesting. Very rare does a film series run this long and maintain the same director. Off the top of my head the only one that comes to mind is Wes Craven and Scream.
I’d settle for any of these films getting a really nice release from Arrow but my dream would be a boxset with them all. Maybe I’m in the minority with this line of thinking but it would instantly become one of my most prized possesions.
