Zach Cregger broke into the horror scene with 2022’s Barbarian, which immediately became one of the most talked-about movies of the year, thanks to the insane directions that the filmmaker took the story. Understandably, expectations were high for his next movie, Weapons, which similarly managed to take viewers totally by surprise and even score actor Amy Madigan an Oscar for her performance as Gladys. Just last week, Cregger’s Resident Evil set financial and critical records, proving once again he’s a dominating force in the world of horror, though his next movie might be his most provocative.
Even before the release of Resident Evil, Cregger confirmed his next movie would be the Steven Spielberg-produced The Flood. The filmmaker has teased the project as more of a sci-fi outing, but based on recent comments he made about it, Cregger is setting the bar high for the unsettling nature of the experience.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Cregger teased, “It’s science fiction, and it’s probably my most disturbing film. It’s not a horror movie, but it has a lot of horror in it. I love it. I think it’s really, really special. I’m excited about it.” He also promised the movie has “a lot of horror,” even if the narrative is more rooted in sci-fi. Given just how many unnerving things the filmmaker has put on film up to this point, we’re even more intrigued by what he might offer us in The Flood, despite how few details have been shared about the project.
Even after the success of Resident Evil, Cregger isn’t completely taking time away from filmmaking, as he shared of the status of The Flood, “We are casting now. We’re in soft prep. I’m hoping to start hard prep in February, and hopefully we’re going to be shooting it next summer. I’m so excited. I’m really excited. I love it.”
These latest remarks line up with comments the filmmaker shared earlier this month about how he conceived of the idea.
“I was watching this movie, and somebody in the movie I was watching was entering an abandoned spaceship. And my wife was like, ‘There’s nothing scarier than being trapped in space.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s interesting. Maybe there’s something here.’ And then this character goes into the ship and they find something that was pretty weird and scared them,” Cregger shared with Deadline. “And I was thinking, ‘What would be weirder and scarier than that? What could happen in this scenario that would freak me out more than this?’ And it’s never happened to me before, but in a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes.”
He added, “I just knew what it could be; I think I probably stood up and was like, ‘I have it!’ It was a total ridiculous moment, but I love it. So then I wrote that as I was writing Resident Evil. I was writing those two movies at the same time.”
The Flood currently has a release date of August 11, 2028.
