Let the Devil in – Diablo
Speaking of bleak games, few have endings as bleak as the original Diablo. After spending countless hours slaying every creature in Hell in an effort to find the best gear and hone your warrior’s abilities until they’ve become the ultimate demon-slaying badass, you finally make it to Big Red himself.
His minions don’t offer much of a challenge, but they’re merely fodder to wear you out. After the Pawns have been wiped out, it’s time to dispatch the King. The fight is a tough one. You quickly learn to fear Diablo’s signature attack — you know, the one where he fires a stream of crimson lightning that seems to cut down even the most hardened fighters.
Then you finally do it. With every last ounce of remaining energy, you strike, and the Lord of Hell is slain. The ancient war between good and evil is over, you won.
Oh wait, no you didn’t.
As you can see in the video above, Diablo’s physical form may have been vanquished, but his essence remains trapped within the soulstone, waiting to be freed. In order to keep this from happening, our fearless warrior gently places the soulstone on his forehead, turning his body into a prison. The only problem is he’s essentially in adjoining cells with Satan.
Shoving a rock into your head and gradually succumbing to the influence of Lord of Terror who probably tore the hero’s soul apart when he won that inner battle is a shitty way for anyone to die, but it’s especially awful if you thought you just saved the world.
