The Evil Within
Arguably the most anticipated survival horror game of the year was The Evil Within. Birthed from the twisted mind of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, this game isn’t as scary as it wants to be, but it makes up for that with some old school design that should make any Resident Evil 4 fan nostalgic.
Mikami and Co. got a lot right in their attempt to give frustrated Resident Evil fans another option. It plays similarly to the later entries in Capcom’s gargantuan horror franchise, only here, every fight requires a more strategic approach. Going in guns blazing will always get you killed, and even if it was a viable approach, I wouldn’t recommend it anyway because then you’d miss out on all the creative monster designs this game has to offer.
Only time will tell if The Evil Within gets the momentum it needs — and deserves — to become the next big horror franchise. I’d very much like to see that happen, because this is one twisted world I’d love to return to.
If you only play a few video games before Halloween, I’ve spent enough time with each of the above to give them an eager recommendation. Each game is strong in its own way, while offering wildly different experiences so everyone’s happy.
Now that I’ve shown you mine, it’s your turn to reciprocate. Let me know which of the above game(s) you’re playing or planning on playing in the poll below, and if I missed something, let me know what I overlooked in the comments!
