Under the Skin
I rarely enjoy horror films that try and make the extraterrestrial scary. Don’t get me wrong, aliens can be terrifying, but filmmakers too often try to make what’s become a classic abduction or invasion scenario into something that’s unpredictable. Alien Abduction and Extraterrestrial are good examples of spectacular fumbles, and they’re also alarmingly uninspired.
Under the Skin bucks this trend by following the alien (Scarlett Johansson) doing the invading — or in this case, the seducing. Johansson has proven adept at playing the silver screen badass, a femme fatale with little emotion. If you were to take something like her portrayal of Black Widow in The Avengers, remove any remaining emotions and replace them with more of that cold, calculating intellect, you’d have something that resembles her character in Under the Skin.
Also worth mentioning is Micachu’s unnerving soundtrack and an abduction scene that handily beats everything that’s come before it.
