Housebound

Kiwi horror Housebound may very well be the funniest movie I’ve seen this year. It’s scary, too, but that’s never really the point.
Like a unicorn, a well-executed horror comedy is a rare thing to see in the wild nowadays. Some of my all-time favorite films — Drag Me to Hell, The Cabin in the Woods, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Shaun of the Dead — are horror comedies. In the right hands, humor, heart and copious amounts of gore can be magical. Also not unlike a unicorn.
The smart script, intriguing mystery and well-crafted scares may have been enough for Housebound to make this list, but this film goes a step further by gifting us with one of the quirkiest and most lovable casts I’ve seen on film in some time. Watch it.
