Alone in the Dark: Illumination
When Atari announced reboots of two of their oldest horror franchises, I, like much of the Internet, met that reveal with a cautious optimism. I never expected either of them to be good, so I wasn’t necessarily disappointed when Haunted House: Cryptic Graves turned out rather poorly.
I have a modicum more faith in Alone in the Dark: Illumination, especially following the universally panned Cryptic Graves. One bad game is par for the course for modern day Atari, but two failures would almost definitely kill both franchises.
As much as I respect what Alone in the Dark has done to get my favorite genre to where it is today, I’ve never really been able to sit down with one of those games for more than a few minutes. Illumination stands a good chance at not sharing that fate so long as it finds novel ways to incorporate its borrowed ideas.
A simple copy/paste of things we liked in Left 4 Dead won’t be enough to keep this franchise afloat.
